Wasim Jaffer created history when he became the first batsman to reach 10,000 runs in the history of Ranji Trophy. The veteran batsman achieved the landmark on Day 2 of Vidarbha's ongoing match against Bengal in Kolkata. In December 2011, he had overtaken former Mumbai stalwart, Amol Muzamdar as the highest run-getter in the tournament.
Jaffer, the former Mumbai captain, moved to Vidarbha ahead of the 2015-16 season. He already holds the record for being the highest run-scorer in the multi-day domestic tournament. He attained the five-figure mark in 126 matches, 196th innings.
He attained the milestone when he reached seven runs in the ongoing game. Speaking about his achievement later, the veteran batsman said, āI feel really honoured to be the first batsman to achieve the landmark. It is hugely satisfying to have the honour of being the top run-scorer and also most centuries in the premiere tournament like the Ranji Trophy.
āI feel the Almighty has been kind to me. I feel fortunate to have played for a top team like Mumbai (till 2014-15) where you have to keep getting better all the time because there is so much competition. I think that culture helped me become a better player. Also to share the dressing room with a number of great players also helped.ā
The 37-year old has amassed over 17000 runs since his first-class debut in 1996 at an average of 50 with the highest score of 314* for Mumbai. A batsman in the classical mould, Jaffer has scored two double-centuries in 31 Tests while playing for India. In a career spanning around 19 years, he was the main-stay of Mumbaiās lineup before shifting to Vidarbha ahead of the season. He led the team to two Ranji Titles before handing over the captaincy. Since joining Vidarbha, he played a crucial knock for the team against Assam to help set-up their first win of the season.
Reflecting on his journey, Jaffer said, āWhen I started, my game was different. Then you start watching certain players and see how they play and become better every season. Also speaking to lot of players and picking their brains is something which helped me become what I am today.ā
āThere are so many people involved in making you a better player. So I feel that the journey is wonderful. It (attaining landmarks) doesnāt happen over a period of five-seven years, it takes number of years, practice sessions and matches and thatās what makes the journey sweeter.
āYou play against so many different players, who all have different styles. But as you observe them, you need to find what suits you. Itās the journey which you enjoy,ā he added.
When asked which innings stands out for him the most, Jaffer said, āMore than an innings, I think winning the Ranji Trophies has been special, because when you play 10-11 games to achieve a certain goal, it feels very special. Not many teams can win the Ranji Trophy, but I have been very lucky that I could win it eight times with Mumbai. It is special when you score runs in the final because there is so much pressure.ā
