Ranji Trophy 2019-20, Fifth Round: Day One Wrap

Cheteshwar Pujara’s 50th First Class hundred headlined the opening day of the fifth round of the Ranji Trophy 2019-20.

Here’s how the action unfolded on Saturday:

Pujara scored his 50th First Class hundred while Sheldon Jackson scored an unbeaten 99 as Saurashtra, after electing to bat, scored 296/2 against Karnataka. Pujara scored an unbeaten 162 off 238 balls, hitting 17 fours and a six.

Shams Mulani and skipper Aditya Tare did a fine recovery job as Mumbai, facing Tamil Nadu, ended the first day at 284/6. The two put up a 155-run stand before Mulani was dismissed for 87 in the final over of the day. R Ashwin and R Sai Kishore shared the spoils for Tamil Nadu, scalping three wickets each. 

While Ashwin, Dinesh Karthik and Abhinav Mukund returned to Tamil Nadu’s playing XI, Bhupen Lalwani, Hardik Tamore and Vinayak Bhoir made debuts.  

In Chhattisgarh versus Assam match in Guwahati, hundred from Amandeep Khare and fifties from skipper Harpreet Singh Bhatia and Shashank Singh, who is batting on 60, guided Chhattisgarh to 276/7.

For Assam, Arup Das and Riyan Parag picked up three wickets each. Nagaland, meanwhile, scored 356/5 on the opening day of the game against Arunachal Pradesh on the back of Shrikant Mundhe’s 165 and Zhimomi’s 76.

In Ongole, K V Sasikanth scalped five wickets as Andhra bowled out Hyderabad for 225. Andhra then ended the day at 13/0. In a Plate Group match in Balurghat, hundred from Indrajit Kumar and fifties from Kumar Mridul and Rahmat Ullah, who is unbeaten on 67 at stumps on day one, guided Bihar to 308/5. 

Salman Nizar scored an unbeaten 91 as Kerala recovered from 89/6 and went on to score 227 against Punjab, who ended the opening day at 46/2 in Trivandrum. In a Group A clash, Gujarat ended the opening day at 258/4 against Rajasthan as Samit Gohel scored 93 and Bhargav Merai chipped in with 54 runs.

In Nagpur, Akshay Wakhare and Aditya Sarvate shared the spoils, scalping five and four wickets respectively, as Vidarbha bowled out Bengal for 170. At stumps, the defending champions had scored 89 losing three wickets.

At the Karnail Singh Stadium, Himanshu Sangwan scalped six wickets as Railways bowled out Madhya Pradesh for 124. Railways ended the day at 104/3, trailing Madhya Pradesh by 20 runs, with Mrunal Devdhar batting on 43 and Saurabh Singh unbeaten on 3.

Suryakant Pradhan too registered a six-wicket haul as Odisha bowled out Haryana for 90 before ending the day at 141/5, taking a 51-run lead. In Kanpur, Mohammad Saif’s unbeaten 99 and Rinku Singh’s 62 guided Uttar Pradesh to 295/5 against Baroda. 

In Palam, meanwhile, skipper Parvez Rasool dominated the proceedings, scoring unbeaten 171 off 163 balls with the help of 23 fours and 2 sixes, as Jammu and Kashmir, facing Services, ended the day at 338/7.

Maharashtra, facing Jharkhand, recovered from 88/5 to end the opening day at 227/5. While Azim Kazi scored an unbeaten 70, Vishant More, who before getting retired hurt, scored 67.

In a Plate Group game, Iqbal Abdulla and Yashpal Singh’s 84 and 80 respectively as Sikkim recovered from 78/4 to finish at 264 against Chandigarh, who ended the day at 4/1.

For Goa, who are facing Pondicherry in a top of the table clash of Plate Group, skipper Amit Verma scored an unbeaten 113 as his team ended the opening day at 252/7.
