India U-19 registered a 334-run win against England U-19 in their first four-day match of the tour in Chesterfield. After Manjot Kalra’s 117-ball 122 that set the tone for the game, Kamlesh Nagarkoti (10 wickets) was instrumental in helping the team register a big win with a five-for in each innings.
Asked to bat, the Indian colts were propelled to 519 in the first innings by Kalra’s whirlwind knock. Although they lost skipper Himanshu Rana for naught in the third over, Prithvi Shaw held the innings together with run-a-ball 86. Riyan Parag Das made 68 runs while Harvik Desai made a solid 89 to put the visitors in an advantageous position. Shivam Mavi down the order, contributed unbeaten 41 runs to help the side to a mammoth first innings score.
Along with Nagarkoti, Mavi then returned to skittle England out for 195 runs. Mavi bowled H Brooks for 17 to end the opening stand for 56 while Rana followed up with the wicket of Max Holder 22 runs later. The Indian pace duo then ran through the line- up in 54.2 overs.
Nagarkoti claimed five for 49 while Mavi picked four for 51 to bowl India to a 324-run lead.
Building on the lead, half-centuries by Shaw and Das helped India set England a 498-run target. Rana opening the innings with Shaw, was once again sent back early in the innings. Although India lost their middle-order batsmen at regular intervals, Shaw anchored the innings with a 69-run knock. And with Das scoring a quick-fire 34-ball 50, India declared their innings on 173 for six at the fall of his wicket.
The Nagarkoti-led attack then bundled England out for a paltry 163 to claim victory. The pacer claimed five for 63 in England’s second outing while Mavi and Ashok Sandhu picked two wickets each.
