Saurashtra beat J & K; Vidarbha triumph over hosts Punjab

Spinners Ravindra Jadeja, Dharmendrasinh Jadeja and VM Jivrajani help Saurashtra to a thumping win. Akshay Karnewar and Akshay Wakhare bowl Vidarbha to a resounding win over hosts Punjab on Day 3 of the second round of the Ranji Trophy 2017-18.

Delhi, Gujarat and Karnataka sniff victory. Mumbai and Andhra seize first innings lead over hosts MP and Baroda respectively.

Here are the highlights of the day:

Group A

Railways vs Delhi in New Delhi: The Ishant Sharma-led attack bundled Railways out for 136 to seize a 311-run first innings lead and enforced the follow on. At Stumps, Railways were 157 for six in the second innings and trailing by 154 runs with Nitin Bhille (54*) and Avinash Yadav (13*) in the middle. 

Earlier in the day, Vikas Mishra claimed three wickets while Manan Sharma picked one more to take his tally of scalps to four to bowl the hosts after resuming on 58 for five.

Mishra then made the first dent in Railways second innings by claiming Shivkant Shukla with 14 runs on the board. He also later accounted for Saurabh Wakaskar while Pulkit Narang and Manan also picked two wickets apiece to further strengthen Delhi’s position.

Hyderabad vs Uttar Pradesh in Hyderabad:
No play for the third successive day due to inclement weather. 

Karnataka vs Assam in Mysore: At 169 for six in the second innings, Assam were trailing by 155 runs at Stumps on Day 3. K Gowtham continued to impress with his all-round skills in the match. After picking a four-for in the first innings, he scored 149 to boost the hosts to a massive total. He then returned to deal telling blows to the Assam line-up.

Earlier, after resuming their innings on 427 for six, Karnataka declared for the addition of 42 runs to their overnight total. K Gowtham, who had resumed his innings on 147 was caught by Arup Das off his own bowling. A bit later, the hosts declared their inning on 469 for seven with a 324-run first innings lead.

Abhimanyu Mithun claimed two early wickets to leave Assam on 19 for two, while Vinay Kumar bowled Rishav Das 31 runs later to push the visitors further on the back-foot. Sibsankar Roy and Gokul Sharma strove to revive the innings by forging a partnership but Gowtham struck to claim the latter and left Assam on 106 for four. He then claimed two more wickets to tip the balance further in Karnataka’s favour.
Gokul was batting on 62 off 111 with Abu Nechim Ahmed when play ended for the day.

Group B

Saurashtra vs J & K in Rajkot: Saurashtra cantered to an innings and 212-run win on the penultimate day of the ongoing round of the Ranji Trophy. Double centurion Ravindra Jadeja, who helped set the stage by raising a mountainous total with Sheldon Jackson returned to contribute with the ball as well. 

After J & K resumed their first innings on 103 for four on Day 3, they were spun out for 156 by Dharmendrasinh Jadeja (6/68) and Ravindra Jadeja (4/40).

Trailing by 468 runs, the visitors were asked to follow on and were again bowled out for 256. Ravindra Jadeja claimed 3/69 while off spinner VM Jivrajani picked 6/79 to bowl Saurashtra to victory. No 3 batsman, Punit Bisht and Ram Dayal lower down the order scored half-centuries in J & K’s second innings. 

Saurashtra picked seven points from the win.

Team Rajasthan vs Jharkhand in Jaipur: Following on, Jharkhand were 102 for one at stumps on Day 3 and trailing by 56 runs.

Earlier after resuming their first innings on 97 for two, Jharkhand were bowled out for 265 by the Pankaj Singh-led attack. The pacer picked 4/48 while AV Choudhary, TN Dhillon and M Lomror picked two wickets each.

However, Mohammed Nazim Siddiqui anchored Jharkhand’s second innings with an unbeaten 71-run knock until the end of third day’s play. The opener was batting with Virat Singh when play ended for the day.

Gujarat vs Kerala in Nadiad: Chasing 105 runs for victory, Gujarat were 22 for the loss of one wicket at Stumps on the penultimate day of the match. While SB Gohil was sent back by Akshay Chandran, Priyank Panchal was batting with CT Gaja when play ended for the day. Gujarat need 83 runs to win.

Batting on 91, Chirag Gandhi resumed Gujarat’s innings on 307 for nine and was trapped lbw by Akshay Chandran without a run added to the overnight scores. Gujarat had seized a 99-run first innings lead when the innings was wrapped on the third morning.

Debutant SA Desai (6/80) and Piyush Chawla (3/66) then bowled the opposition out for 203 runs in their second innings to set-up the game in Gujarat’s favour.

Group C

Baroda vs Andhra in Vadodara: Hanuma Vihari (150) and Ricky Bhui (145) propelled Andhra to a first innings lead against the hosts in the ongoing match at the Reliance Cricket Stadium. The visitors were 505 for nine at Stumps on Day 3 in reply to Baroda’s first innings total of 373.

After resuming their innings on 190 for two, Vihari and Bhui who had resumed their respective innings on 71 continued to plunder runs off the Baroda attack. The middle-order batsmen had seized the advantage from the home team with a 308-run stand until Bhui was bowled by Lukman Meriwala. Although wickets fell at regular intervals, Andhra were in a commanding position at the end of day’s play. Atit Sheth finished the day with a five-wicket haul.

Madhya Pradesh vs Mumbai in Indore: Jay Bista’s 135-run knock, complimented by Siddhesh Lad (82 off 137) and Suryakumar Yadav (91 off 149) helped set the foundation for a first innings lead. Lower-order batsmen, debutant Akash Parker (21 off 113) and Sufiyan Sheikh (30* off 56) put up a determined performance to help Mumbai to a first innings lead.

Earlier, after resuming the innings on 130 for one, Bista and Lad carried Mumbai to 221 until the opener was sent back by Ankit Sharma. 39 runs later, Chandrakant Sakure claimed Lad to leave Mumbai on 260 for three. The visitors then lost Shubham Ranjane while Abhishek Nayar was run out leaving the team on 296 for five. However, Parker then joined hands with captain Suryakumar to keep the Mumbai innings in the reckoning. The youngster held one end up patiently as the middle-order bat chipped away at the huge total. The partnership was ended for 57 by Ishwar Pandey, who disrupted the skipper’s stumps.

Parker then continued to rally on with Sheikh. When he was sent back by Mihir Hirwani, Mumbai were left on 392 for seven. Sheikh then took the visitors to a first innings lead with Vijay Gohil. When play ended for the day, Sheikh was batting with Royston Dias.

Tamil Nadu vs Tripura in Chennai:
Tamil Nadu had added 25 runs to their overnight score and lost two wickets until rain stopped play in Chennai. Since weather continued to play spoilsport, play couldn’t be resumed. TN were 357 for four with Baba Indrajith (89*) and R Ashwin (1*) in the middle when the third day’s play was called off later in the evening.

Earlier MS Washington Sundar, who had resumed his innings on 156 was the first to return to the pavilion; dismissed by AK Sarkar for 159. 15 runs later, Dinesh Karthik was sent back by the bowler leaving TN on 356 for four.

Group D

Chhattisgarh vs Bengal in Raipur: Ashoke Dinda’s seven for 21 skittled Chhattisgarh out for 110 in the first innings and the visitors were asked to follow on. Although centurion Abhimanyu Chauhan strove to anchor the Chhattisgarh innings, Mohhamed Shami (4/45) helped Bengal maintain the upper-hand.

While Chhattisgarh strove to put up a better performance in their second innings, Mohammed Shami claimed wickets at regular intervals to keep the match tipped in Bengal’s favour. While Aamir Gani claimed S Gupta to leave the visitors on 34 for one. Abhimanyu Chauhan (115) then stitched a partnership with Ashutosh Singh to shape the innings. The pair had taken the side to 206 when Shami claimed Ashutosh. The pacer then claimed three more including Chauhan to leave the visitors on 211 for five.

At Stumps Chhattisgarh were 229 for five and trailing by 190 runs.

Punjab vs Vidarbha in Mohali: Vidarbha pulled off a comprehensive innings and 117-run win against Punjab in Mohali.

After resuming their innings on 419 for five, Vidarbha were bowled out for 505 earlier in the day. Ganesh Satish scored 164 after resuming on 126 before he was sent back by Abhishek Sharma. The centurion’s efforts had helped the visitors seize a solid 344-run first innings lead.

Akshay Karnewar and Akshay Wakhare then dismantled the Punjab lineup in 72.1 overs. The spinners skittled the hosts out for 226 to claim victory.

Himachal vs Goa in Dharamsala: After resuming on 356 for four, Himachal declared their innings on 625 for seven. N Gangta was unbeaten on 127 when the hosts declared their innings later in the day. Goa were 131 without loss in their second innings and were trailing by 239 runs when play ended for the day.
