Aditya Waghmode held the fort at the Wankhede Stadium to help Baroda stay on top against Mumbai in the hosts 500th Ranji Trophy match. On Day 2 of Round 5 in the ongoing season of the tournament, batsmen continued to dominate the game in most matches.
Stuart Binny helped Karnataka to a commanding position after Mayank Agarwal set the stage with a sparkling century. Like Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara and R Motwani too missed out on double tons in the ongoing round. Vijay Shankar and Baba Aparajith scored centuries to keep Tamil Nadu in an advantageous position. Haryana recovered well on the second day to seize the advantage from Team Rajasthan. H Patel played a solid knock to post a par score and the bowling unit then pegged the visitors back with a good performance.
Here are the highlights of the day:
Group A Assam vs Uttar Pradesh: At the end of day’s play, Assam were trailing by 70 runs with four wickets in hand in reply to UP’s 349 in the first innings.
Resuming on 25 without loss, the hosts were 279 for six at Stumps on Day 2. Valuable contributions from the Sibsankar Roy (72 off 129) and Amit Sinha (48 off 90) helped Assam stay in the game as they fight for a first innings lead despite losing wickets at regular intervals. When play ended for the day, Pallav Kumar Das was batting on 10 with Sarupam Purkayastha (34*).
UP’s Saurabh Kumar claimed four wickets while Ankit Rajpoot and Israr Azim have picked a wicket each.

In reply, Saurabh Wakaskar (32*) and Shivakant Shukla (47*) had taken Railways to 88 without loss until stumps.

Although Agarwal, who had resumed his innings on 169 was run out for 176, Stuart Binny continued to milk the opposition with the lower-half of the lineup. The all-rounder scored 118 until he was caught by V Tokas off his own bowling. CM Gautam made a valuable 46 while Shreyas Gopal missed out on a century by eight runs. Vikas Mishra and Manan Sharma claimed three wickets apiece as Delhi bowled out the hosts for 649.
With Unmukt Chand and Gautam Gambhir in the middle, Delhi were 20 without loss at the end of day’s play in Alur.

Group B Jharkhand vs J & K: J & K were bowled out for 376 after resuming on 357 for six on the second morning. Punit Bisht, who was batting on 101 when play resumed, was sent back for 115 by Varun Aaron. The Jharkhand pacer finished with a four-for as he wrapped-up the innings.
In reply, Jharkhand were 220 for five and trailing by 156 runs at the end of day’s play. Mohammed Nazim Siddiqui (70) and Anand Singh (68) got the team off to a good start. However, after Aamir Aziz ended the stand for 117 with the wicket of Siddiqui, Jharkhand lost wickets at quick intervals. Parvez Rasool and Mohammed Mudhasir claimed two wickets each to leave the team on 197 for five.
When play ended for the day, Ishan Kishan was batting on 11 with Kumar Deobrat (13*).

Haryana vs Team Rajasthan: After resuming on 99 for seven, Haryana recovered to post 223 before being bowled out on the second day. H Patel’s 83 off 108 balls helped the hosts revive the innings and post a respectable total on the board. He was ably supported by A Chahal (22 off 73 balls) in the rebuilding effort.
The Haryana attack then left Team Rajasthan bobbling on 74 for seven at Stumps on Day 2. A Mishra claimed two while the rest of the bowlers picked a wicket each to tip the balance in the hosts favour.

Saurashtra were bowled out for 570 after resuming their innings on 311. Snell Patel departed on his overnight score of 156 while Cheteshwar Pujara, who seemed to be well on course for another double hundred was sent back for 182 by S Desai. The young Gujarat bowler finished with a four-for even as Saurashtra piled on the runs in Rajkot. Prerak Mankad made 62 while Jaydev Shah and Chirag Jani contributed 46 runs each.
Parthiv Patel was at the crease with Priyank Panchal when play ended for the day.

When play ended for the day, Tripura were 68 for one with S Singh and U Bose in the middle.

Overnight batsman Baba Indrajith added six runs to his tally in the morning before being sent back by Suryakant Pradhan leaving the team on 298 for four. Baba Aparajith then joined hands with Vijay Shankar to pile on runs for TN. The duo added 177 for the fifth wicket until V Shankar was trapped lbw by Biplab Samantray after reaching the three-figure mark. Aparajith then carried the innings forward and was unbeaten on 109 off 230 balls Abhinav Mukund declared the innings later in the day.
Odisha were 36 without loss when play ended for the day.

While Shardul Thakur accounted for Vishnu Solanki earlier in the day to leave Baroda on 110 for two the opener patiently held up one end. Waghmode played watchfully even as skipper Deepak Hooda milked runs off the Mumbai attack. The big hitting batsman sent Vijay Gohil sailing over the fence for all his five sixes. Hooda scored 75 off 113 balls until he returned attempting another big hit off the left-arm spinner.
Waghmode then found another ally in Swapnil Singh to build on the solid platform. Coming together at 250 for three, the duo had taken Baroda to 355 before the opener was sent back by Shreyas Iyer. With Royston Dias injured while bowling in the morning and wickets hard to come by, the hosts also had to rope in their part-time bowlers.
When play ended for the day, Swapnil (63*) had taken Baroda to 376 for four with Abhjijit Karmabelkar (8*). The visitors were leading by 205 runs at Stumps.

SR Ramaswamy, who was batting on 117 when play resumed on the second morning, went on to score 182 until being sent back by Aamir Gani. While both the openers had posted centuries, and A Sarvate lower down the order contributed 89 runs the rest of the lineup caved in to the Bengal attack. While the Vidarbha batters had dominated on the first day, the Bengal bowlers brought the hosts back into the game on the second day. Ashoke Dinda claimed three wickets while Ishan Porel claimed four to bowl the visitors out on the second day.
However, Bengal too lost three early wickets and were 89 for three at stumps.
A Eswaran was removed by Lalit Yadav in the first over with only a run on the board. 42 runs later the bowler accounted for Sudip Chatterjee while A Wakhare followed up the wicket of Abhishek Kumar Raman to leave Bengal on 43 for three. When play ended for the day, Koushik Gosh batting with Manoj Tiwary had taken Bengal to 89 for three.

Himachal vs Chhattisgarh: After their bowlers bundled HP out for a paltry total, Chhattisgarh batsmen built on the advantage on the second day. Resuming on 91 for one, they went on to post 389 for six until Stumps. Powered by Rishabh Tiwari’s 131, the visitors tipped the balance in their favour. The opener’s contribution was complemented by the middle-order. Ashutosh Singh scored 54 while Amandeep Khare made 78. When play ended for the day, Manoj Singh (21*) and S Ruikar (35*) had extended the lead to 214 runs.

After resuming on 228 for eight, Services added 35 runs to their overnight score before losing the remaining two wickets. Sachidanand Pandey then kept the visitors on a tight leash as he claimed three off the six wickets that fell on the day while V Yadav took one. The first batsman to return to the pavilion, S Amonkar was run out for 11 leaving the team on 21 for one. The hosts’ bowlers then struck at regular intervals. Sagun Kamat too was run out after scoring a half-century.
At the end of day’s play, Amogh Desai was batting on 37.
