Nayar, Gohil bowl Mumbai to victory

Abhishek Nayar bowled Mumbai to a thrilling win against Hyderabad with a five-wicket haul even as B Anirudh (84*) played a determined innings to take the game to the defending champions.

Samit Gohil batted Odisha out of the game and the tournament with an unbeaten triple-century in the second innings of the quarter-finals. The opener created a world record for the highest score (359 not out) as an opener carrying his bat through in the second innings. The Parthiv Patel-led team have qualified for the semi-finals on the basis of the first innings lead.

Chasing 232 runs for victory, Hyderabad needed 111 runs with three wickets in hand when play resumed on the last day in Raipur while Mumbai needed three wickets to enter the next phase. With the lower-order for company, B Anirudh worked to keep the S Badrinath-led team in the game. With CV Milind, the No 3 batsman had added 64 runs to the overnight total until Abhishek Nayar struck. The all-rounder had the lower-order batsman nick the ball to the wicketkeeper and gave Mumbai their first and much needed breakthrough. He then followed up with the wicket of Mohammed Siraj two runs later to reduce Hyderabad to 185 for nine.

Anirudh, however, rallied on and had taken Hyderabad to 201 with M Ravi Kiran until Nayar accounted for the No 11 batsman to claim victory. The experienced cricketer bowled Mumbai to a 30-run win with a five-for in a nerve-wracking contest.

Samit Gohil resumed his knock on 261 on the fifth morning with the team on 541 for eight and remained unbeaten on 359 when the side was bowled out for 641. While Hardik Patel had earlier retired hurt on his overnight score of 11, Jasprit Bumrah had partnered the opener as he inched towards his maiden triple-ton. However, with Gohil, a run sort of the landmark, Patel returned to continue his innings. The opener soon went past the 300-run mark, and continued to milk the bowlers to bring his 350 up. But when he was on 359, Patel was sent back by Biplab Samantray to end the Gujarat innings on 641. Gohil’s 723-run ball effort had set Odisha a mammoth 706-run target.

With the result a foregone conclusion, S Senapati helped Odisha to 81 for one until the match ended in a draw. Gujarat entered the semi-finals on the basis of a first innings lead.
