Harshal Patel’s five-for followed by an unbeaten half-century gave Haryana a thumping win against Jammu and Kashmir, but what made the comprehensive win even more special was their captain Amit Mishra’s hat-trick.
On returning to the team for the one-day tournament, experienced campaigners Dhawal Kulkarni and Abhishek Nayar were once again instrumental in Mumbai’s victory in a low scoring match against Assam.
The only centurion of fourth day of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2015-16, Kedar Jadhav put Maharashtra in an advantageous position for a win against Tripura. While Axar Patel won Gujarat the match with the bat, Jalaj Saxena handed MP a comprehensive win with his all-round performance.
Here are the highlights of the day:
Group A
Assam vs Mumbai: Mumbai 198/10 (S Iyer 49, S K Yadav, A Verma 2/23, S Mohammed 2/24) beat Assam 102/10 (A Verma 33, S Mohammed 25, D Kulkarni 4/19, S Trivedi 3/29, A Nayar 3/37) by 96 runs.
In the low scoring game in Hyderabad, the Dhawal Kulkarni-led attack defended 198 runs to bowl Mumbai to a 96-run win against Assam. While Shreyas Iyer missed out on a half-century, he was the top-scorer for the Aditya Tare-led team with 49 followed by Surya Kumar Yadav (42) which helped the team something to bowl at.
Kulkarni then accounted for both the Assam openers to leave the side on 25 for two and finished with four for 19. Experienced all-rounder Abhishek Nayar and Sagar Trivedi then claimed the middle-order to push the opposition on the back-foot.
The senior pacer then had Wasiqur Rahman out lbw and bowled Pritam Das to leave Assam on 83 for eight. Trivedi then followed up with the wickets of S Mohammed and Krishan Das to bundle Assam out for 102.
Tamil Nadu vs Punjab: TN 226/10 (D Karthik 69, S Kaul 4/17, BS Sran 3/37) lost to Punjab (J Singh 85, M Siddana 67*, G Mann 41, R Sathish 2/23) by 6 wickets
After a five-for against Hyderabad, Siddarth Kaul claimed four for 17 against Tamil Nadu to bowl the team out for 226. Barring Dinesh Karthik's 69 while opening for TN, the rest of the line-up failed to make substantial contributions to the total. While the top five batsmen reached double-digit figures the rest returned to the dressing room with single-digit figurers as the Punjab pacers wrapped-up the innings in 45.3 overs.
Sran claimed three for 37 while Harbhajan Singh claimed the only wicket of Murali Vijay (35) and Mandeep Singh accounted for the wicketkeeper-batsman.
Jiwanjot Singh then led Punjab's chase with 85 off 101 before being sent back by Ravichandran Ashwin and Gurkeerat Singh Mann contributed 41. Mayank Siddana then took the team to the target with an unbeaten 67. It was the middle-order batsman's second successive half-century.
Hyderabad vs Services: Hyd 224/7 (PK Naidu 45*, CV Milind 42*, B Sandeep 41, A Bloch 3/34) lost to Services 225/5 (M Quadir 68, R Paliwal 64, R Kiran 2/41, CV Milind 2/45) by 5 wickets
After electing to bat, Hyderabad were lifted to 224 for seven by lower-order batsmen PK Naidu (45*) and CV Milind (42*). Their 85-run unbroken partnership for the eighth wicket set the opposition a 225-run target in Hyderabad.
After being left on 51 for two, Mumtaz Quadir (68) and Rajat Paliwal (64) then stitched a partnership to take Services to 167 until the latter returned to the dressing room. While Milind accounted for the wicket, Ravi Kiran sent back Quadir a while later. But, S Swain and Yashpal Singh helped the Services achieve the target in the penultimate over.
Group B
Gujarat vs Railways: Railways 259/5 (A Gosh 96*, M Rawat 60, A Patel 1/35) lost to Gujarat 260/6 (A Patel 75, R Bhatt 72, K Sharma 2/38, A Singh 2/53) by 4 wickets
After being asked to bat, Railways were taken to a respectable score by middle-order bat Arindam Gosh. After scoring a half-century in his previous game against Kerala, the 29-year old made an unbeaten 96 to take his team to 259 at the end of their allotted quota of overs. He was involved in a 142-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Mahesh Rawat until the wicketkeeper was run out by Parthiv Patel. With Karn Sharma and Ashish Yadav then chipping in with 26 and 22* runs respectively Railways set Gujarat a 260-run target.
Anureet Singh then trapped Smit Patel lbw in the first over without a run on the board and Gujarat were in a precarious position at 79 for three with the wickets of P Panchal and Parthiv (33). And with Ashish Yadav castling Manprit Juneja for 26, the match was evenly poised.
However, Rujul Bhatt (72) and Axar Patel (75) joined forces to keep Gujarat in the game with a 120-run stand. J Karia and Rohit Dahiya then took Gujarat to victory with two balls to spare.
Kerala vs Jharkhand: Kerala 236/8 (S Baby 61, VA Jagadeesh 60, R Shukla 3/47) lost to Jharkhand 240/5 (S Tiwary 87, K Singh 48) by 5 wickets
Chasing 237, Saurabh Tiwary batted Jharkhand to a five-wicket victory against Kerala at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The middle-order batsman scored an unbeaten 87 of 94 balls with seven boundaries and a six as he attained the target with 18 balls to spare. Kasuhal Singh contributed 48 runs to the chase before he was out leg-before wicket to P Padmanabhan while the rest of the line-up chipped in with valuable contributions.
Earlier, Rahul Shukla claimed three wickets as Kerala posted 236 after Varun Aaron opted to field. Sachin Baby made 61 while VA Jagadeesh scored 60 at the top of the order as the team looked to set Jharkhand a stiff target.
Haryana vs J & K: J & K 75/10 (B Singh 24, H Patel 5/21, A Mishra 3/4, J Yadav 2/5) lost to Haryana 76/0 (H Patel 54*, N Saini 20*) by 10 wickets.
Harshal Patel won Haryana a low-scoring match against Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday with an all-round performance. He claimed five for 21 while Amit Mishra picked up a hat-trick and gave away just four runs. It was Mishra’s first List A hat-trick and his victims included Ram Dayal, Waseem Raza and Rohit Sharma.
Meanwhile, JJ Yadav conceded five runs and took two wickets to bowl the Mithun Manhas-led team out for a paltry 75. Opening the batting for Haryana, Harshal then scored 54* off 29 balls to take the team to a thumping win.
Group C
Baroda vs Vidarbha: Baroda 173/10 (A Rayudu 40, Y Pathan 32, R Thakur 4/27, R Jangid 2/15) lost to Vidarbha 174/3 (Faiz Fazal 89, S Badrinath 47*) by 7 wickets
Vidarbha's left-arm pacer Ravikumar Thakur claimed four for 27 to bowl Baroda out with four overs to spare. While Rajneesh Gurbani sent back the openers, Ravi Jangid claimed the key wicket of Yusuf Pathan (32) and Hardik Pandya while Shrikant Wagh later sent back Ambati Rayudu for 40. The Baroda captain was the highest run-getter for his side as he worked to keep the innings in fray. Chasing the sub-par 174-run target, Faiz Fazal scored 89, while captain S Badrinath took the team to a seven-wicket win with an unbeaten 47.
Odisha vs Delhi: Odisha 225/9 (N Behera 50, B Samantray 47, M Sharma 3/47) lost to Delhi 228/5 (G Gambhir 67, Milind 62*, V Rawal 40, A Sahoo 2/58) by 5 wickets
Left-arm spinners - Manan Sharma and Pawan Negi claimed five wickets between them as Delhi kept Odisha to 225 for nine at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. Opener Nataraj Behera was the top-scorer for the visitors with a half-century while Biplab Samantray missed out on his half century by three runs as they posted a modest total on board.
Delhi then lost Unmukt Chand for 11 but skipper Gautam Gambhir led the chase with 67. After the captain was run out, Milind was involved in a 72-run stand with Vaibhav Rawal (40) that helped close in on the target. He then helped the team cross the line with 62 not out.
Tripura vs Maharashtra: Maharashtra 294/10 (K Jadhav 131, R Banik 4/40, S Majumder 3/53) beat Tripura 183/10 (S Majumder 52*, S Gugale 4/21, A Darekar 2/20) by 111 runs.
Captain Kedar Jadhav's 90-ball 131 setup the match for Maharashtra at the Palam Ground in New Delhi. The big-hitting batsman slammed 17 boundaries and three sixes as he helped his team to a sizeable total after electing to bat. While the rest of the line-up got out to low scores, Jadhav's sixth List ‘A’ century propelled the team to 294 against Tripura.
Off-spinner Swapnil Gugale then claimed four while left-arm spinner, Akshay Darekar picked two wickets as Maharashtra bowled Tripura out for 183 on the fourth day of the ongoing one-day tournament.
Group D
MP vs Goa: Goa 214/10 (S Asnodkar 68, S Bandekar 68, J Saxena 2/21, P Datey 2/34) lost to MP 215/3 (HS Bhatia 74, J Saxena 69, N Ojha 47) by seven wickets
Jalaj Saxena carried his good form from the multi-day cricket into the one-day format. The MP cricketer once again contributed both with the bat and the ball to team's victory. After plucking two wickets as the MP bowling unit bowled in tandem to bowl Goa out, he returned to set-up the chase.
Swapnil Asnodakar at the top and S Bandekar in the middle scored 68 runs each to help Goa to 214 before the rest of the lineup caved in to the MP attack. Bowling in tandem, Puneet Datey, Chandrakant Sakure, Saxena and Ankit Sharma claimed two wickets each while Ishwar Pandey and HS Bhatia picked a wicket each to wrap Goa up in 43.2 overs.
The MP middle-order then chased down the total to post a comprehensive win. Bhatia remained unbeaten on 74 while Saxena made 69 and Naman Ojha contributed 47 towards the winning cause.
Bengal vs UP: Bengal 221/10 (S Chatterjee 97, Mohd Javed 4/40, P Chawla 3/53) lost to UP 222/6 (U Sharma 73, P Gupta 47, E Dwivedi 45, M Shami 2/52) by 4 wickets
The Suresh Raina-led UP team beat Manoj Tiwary's Bengal side by four wickets in the ongoing one-day tournament. In his second one-day game, pacer Mohd Javed claimed a four-for to keep Bengal in check after Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/22) and Praveen Kumar (1/47) claimed the openers. Experienced spinner Piyush Chawla claimed three wickets as UP kept the opposition on a tight leash. Top-order bat Sudip Chatterjee made 97 even as the star-studded UP bowling attack struck at regular intervals and bowled Bengal out for 221 with nine balls still remaining in the innings.
Umang Sharma (73) and Prashant Gupta (47) then got UP off to a good start with a 88-run opening stand until Pragyan Ojha ended it with the wicket of the latter. 66 runs later Mohammed Shami accounted for Ekalvya Dwivedi and soon followed up with the wicket of Umang leaving UP on 168 for three. However, although UP lost Suresh Raina and Akshdeep Nath for low scores, Rinku Singh took the team to 222 with 30 not out.
