Ravi Rampaul, No. 10 batsman for West Indies, scored a record 86* to torment the Indian bowlers and set India a target of 270. This after the visitors had been reduced to a dodgy 149 for eight. In the end, it was a sterling partnership between Virat Kohli (117) and Rohit Sharma (90*) that saw India through.

Ravi Rampaul (86*) made the highest score by a No.10 batsman in ODIs, bettering Pakistan’s Mohammad Amir’s unbeaten 73 against New Zealand at Abu Dhabi in 2009. The previous highest score by a No. 10 batsman against India was an unbeaten 56 by Zimbabwean Doug Marillier at Faridabad in 2002.

Rampaul added 99 runs with Kemar Roach for the tenth wicket without being separated – the third-highest tenth-wicket partnership in ODIs. The previous highest tenth-wicket partnership against India was 71 between Andy Roberts and Joel Garner, also for West Indies, at Manchester in 1983.

West Indies were reeling at 149 for eight but ended with 269 for nine – the highest score achieved by any side that lost eight wickets with less than 150 on the board.

Virat Kohli (117) scored his eighth ODI hundred; five of them have come in a chase and India have won seven out of eight games in which Kohli has scored a hundred.

After 71 matches, Kohli’s run-aggregate stands at 2,737 – more than any other Indian batsman at the same stage. Navjot Sidhu had aggregated 2,708.

Kohli has now equalled the world record for most (8) hundreds after 71 matches so far held by Hashim Amla and Salman Butt. It may be noted that Amla is yet to play 71 matches.

Kohli won his seventh Man-of-the-Match award – his third against West Indies.

India have now won 11 consecutive ODIs at home.
