Rampaul, Roach inspired us: Sammy

Visakhapatnam, Dec 2: West Indies captain Darren Sammy appreciated the efforts of his team, especially Ravi Rampaul and Kemar Roach, even as the side fell to their second consecutive loss against India. In the post-match chat with the media, Sammy spoke about fighting to stay alive in the five-match ODI series.

Excerpts:

On getting wickets early on but not being able to sustain the pressure

Yes, we threw some punches at the Indians but they seem to be punching harder back at us. Hats off to Ravi [Rampaul] and [Kemar] Roach; that partnership between them gave us inspiration to go out and try to win but the Indians are punching really hard back at us.

On recovering from nine wickets for 170 runs thanks to Rampaul’s 86*

Ravi and Roach showed the fight in the team; one thing we are not lacking is fight. We are getting that kind of push. We keep putting ourselves in winning positions but we just can’t get over the line. We keep doing that and hopefully sooner than later we can cross that final hurdle.

On what the team could have done differently

I think we created chances early up. If Sehwag [was dismissed] in that second over, it could have been a different ball game. We tried and [Virat] Kohli batted really well in the middle there. We tried to get them out but it was not happening. We will keep our heads up and come back. We have three games left in this series and will look to come stronger at the Indians again.

On Kemar Roach’s bowling

He has had a tough six months, especially catches being dropped off him. But it’s good to see him laugh and smile again and enjoy his cricket. That augurs well for us.
