Mumbai, Nov 10: Ajinkya Rahane smashed a century on Day 1 of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy match against Bengal in Kolkata. Rahane returned to the Mumbai side after missing their first match due to an ankle injury. And what a return it was, the 22-year-old’s 110 helped the defending champions reach a total of 287/4 at the end of Day 1. Skipper Wasim Jaffer too chipped in with 73 runs to aid Mumbai’s cause, while Bengal’s Manoj Tiwary was the surprise wicket-taker ending up with the prized scalps of Rahane and Jaffer.
Over in Chennai, Delhi won the toss and elected to bat against a tough-looking Tamil Nadu side. Shikhar Dhawan set the tone with 41 well-made runs, but Virat Kohli was the real star of the day with an unbeaten knock of 119*. Mithun Manhas too showed his class with a score of 70, helping Delhi reach a commanding 258/3 at the end of day’s play.
