Sehwag cracks a record 219 runs

Indore, Dec 8: After Sachin Tendulkar scored the first-ever double century in ODIs against South Africa in Gwalior on February 24 last year, Virender Sehwag has posted the highest score ever by any player in the format. Sehwag cracked 219 runs to power India to a score of 418 for five in the fourth ODI of their five match series against the West Indies.

Coming off a poor run of form – he had crossed the half-century mark only once in his last 10 innings – Sehwag blazed his way out of the slump by bludgeoning the West Indies attack to all corners of the Holkar cricket stadium here in Indore.

Sehwag’s innings today included 25 fours and seven sixes which meant that an astonishing 142 runs off his bat came in boundaries alone. The Indian captain was also involved in a 176-run stand with Gautam Gambhir for the opening wicket which set the pace for the Indian innings.

Sehwag reached his first 100 runs off just 69 deliveries while bringing up his 200-run effort in 140 deliveries. In all, the Indian batsman played 149 deliveries in his innings of 219 (strike-rate 146.97). Sehwag’s 219 is the 15th century of his ODI career and just his second century against the West Indies.

Dropped on 170 by West Indies skipper Darren Sammy off Ravi Rampaul’s bowling, Sehwag’s innings was characterised by fluent boundaries and hard-run singles. Known to bring up landmarks in his innings with boundaries, today was no different; the audacious batsman moved from 197 to 201 with a boundary off Andre Russell’s bowling.
