Mumbai, Feb 3: At a promotional event in Mumbai on Wednesday, Pakistan’s World Cup winning captain stressed upon the role of the skipper in his team’s success.
Coming down heavily on the Pakistan Cricket Board for not deciding on a skipper to lead the national side at the all important event he said, “For me, the captaincy issue is huge […] The most crucial decision, in fact, which may have a big bearing on how Pakistan fare in the World Cup […] The views of the players could also be taken into account”.
When asked whom he would pick for the position, he replied, “Frankly, I haven’t watched too much cricket of late and so can’t give a well-thought out opinion. I don’t have a favourite to lead in the tournament.”
Imran pointed out that the suspension of the pace duo - Mohammed Asif and Mohammed Aamer - would hurt Pakistan’s chances considerably.
Tipping Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the best captain of the current lot, he said “India have been doing well under Dhoni and, obviously, the players seem to respond very well to his style. Pressure doesn’t affect him and he should be able to handle whatever will come with the World Cup.”
Praising Dhoni’s proactive leadership he added, “I’ve always liked the way Dhoni leads. He’s confident and courageous. Besides, he’s the type to captain from the front, to show the way. Right now, he’s definitely the best around”.
