Dominica, July 10: Shivnarine Chanderpaul, now the most capped player for West Indies, denied India a win in the third and final test with an attritional 116* that saw him occupy the crease for just over 500 minutes. Winning the Man-of-the-Match award, Chanderpaul revealed the reason for being able to put up a big score for his side in the post-match presentation.
Excerpts from the conversation:
On having hit a century in the Test where he became the most capped player for the West Indies
The whole series I was getting out in the 20s and 30s, didn’t know what was going on. I was pretty happy that I was able to carry on in this game and get past that three-figure mark.
On what clicked for him in this Test
I batted with Kirk [Edwards]. I was talking to him about it and I told him that it was at the back of my mind. It’s been happening for a while now since the Sri Lanka series. He told me, ‘Don’t think about it too much, just keep batting and things will happen for you’.
On becoming the most capped player for the West Indies
Well, it’s always an honour to be there. I never expected it when I started. It just goes to show what hard work and perseverance can do over the years.
On having being made an honorary resident of Dominica
I heard of it while I was batting. I must say thank you to the prime minister and thanks to the support in Dominica. It’s been very good for us. We enjoyed it. It was a good Test match.
