We’ve got quality seamers: Brathwaite
Townsville, Aug 12: West Indies opened their account at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup with a four-wicket victory over India here. Led by the experienced Karigg Brathwaite, WI held their nerve to beat India who have been in good form in recent series.
Kyle Mayers’ all-round performance with bat and ball was instrumental in the WI colts’ win. The Man-of-the-Match claimed two wickets and chipped in with valuable 43 runs lower down the order.
Excerpts from the post-match media interaction that involved skipper Brathwaite and MoM Mayers:
Captain Kraigg Brathwaite:
On whether 166 was a good total on the wicket at the Tony Ireland Stadium
We had a look at the pitch in the morning and it did a bit and we knew it wouldn’t be that easy. We had to work hard.
On playing four fast bowlers like any old West Indies attack
We have some quality bowlers and we were working hard in the camp. They are ready and so once they were in they just had to do their stuff.
On the various bowling options (four pacemen and two left-arm spinners)
We have quite a few all-rounders as well. They know how to do their job so when you give them the ball, they just go and do it.
On his batting
It was difficult. You try to work hard and keep it simple to get as many runs as possible.
Man-of-the-Match Kyle Mayers:
On his all-round performance
It was a good performance. I bowled well and the team bowled well. I did my part, stuck to the task [I was given] and stuck to the basics and it came out well in the end. I should have batted right through the innings for the team for the victory [but got out].
On his experience of Australian conditions and the adjustments they necessitate
[...] It is a bit chilly so we had to adapt to that. The pitches are way different from the Caribbean; they seam around a lot more and offer more bounce. I think the pitches here are great here for us as a team because we have quality seamers in our side.
