What

The second match of the 2012 Asia Cup that features Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. India play Sri Lanka in this encounter.

When

March 13, 2012. The game begins at 13:30 IST.

Where

Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur. Both teams have fared well at this venue, though Sri Lanka enjoy a slight advantage having beaten India two of the three times the two teams played here in January 2010. Going by the evidence of the opening encounter between hosts Bangladesh and Pakistan last evening, the wicket has a little bit in it for everyone, the batsmen, pacers and spinners too.

The Teams

Having recently squared off in the CB Series Down Under, both teams are adequately familiar with each other. Although Sri Lanka edged India to play Australia in the finals, the Indians will take heart from their better head-to-head record against the Lankans; they beat Lanka two out of four times – with one game having been tied – in that competition.

Nevertheless, both teams have made a few changes heading into this four-nation event. India are without Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Parthiv Patel and Umesh Yadav, with Yusuf Pathan and Ashok Dinda having made their way into the 15-man squad. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have rested Rangana Herath, Dhammika Prasad and Chanaka Welegedara with medium-pacer Suranga Lakmal and legbreak bowler Seekkuge Prasanna picked as replacements.

Key Players

Having finished as the leading run-getter of the CB Series, Tillakaratne Dilshan will have every opposing team in the Asia Cup worried about his batting form at the top of the Sri Lankan innings. But with Mahela Jayawardene opting to open the bowling attack at the end of the CB Series with Dilshan, there is a good chance the all-rounder will wreak damage with his offspinners as well.

If his blustery century at Hobart is anything to go by, then the Lankan think-tank will be trying hard to come up with a plan to contain Virat Kohli. With Virender Sehwag not playing the tournament, Kohli is certain to come in at No. 3, which means that India’s best ODI batsman on current form will have a bigger opportunity to determine the course of the innings whether India bat first or second.

Trivia

India – Sachin Tendulkar has aggregated 3,107 runs in 83 matches against Sri Lanka – the most by any batsman against any opponent in ODIs.

Sri Lanka – In the CB Series, Sri Lanka’s average total with Jayawardene in the middle-order was 232. Ever since Jayawardene opened the innings, the average score has jumped to 275 (in completed innings).

Historical significance

This is the 11th edition of the Asia Cup, which has previously featured Hong Kong and United Arab Emirates as well. India have won the tournament the most – on five previous occasions – and are also the defending champions of the tournament, having won it in Sri Lanka in 2010.

However, if Sri Lanka go on to win this tournament, they will tie with India for the most tournament wins, having won it on four previous occasions. The only time the Asia Cup was won by a team other than India or Sri Lanka was when Pakistan won the 2000 event held in Bangladesh.
