Winning here is special: Laxman
Kolkata, Nov 17: VVS Laxman continued his romance with Eden Gardens winning the Man-of-the-Match award for a masterful 176 that helped India win the Test and take an unassailable 2-0 series lead. The stylish Hyderabadi batsman now averages 110.63 from 10 matches he has played in the City of Joy.
Laxman’s 176 is his fourth century against the West Indies and his 17th overall. It is also his fourth-highest score in Tests. The batsman spoke about his Test partnerships with Rahul Dravid and his success at Eden in the post-match presentation.
Excerpts:
On the love affair with the Eden Gardens
I have always enjoyed playing here. It has been a special place in cricket – the atmosphere and people who come here to encourage the team. It is a great moment for all of us, winning the series here, especially after a tough series in England. It is a great feeling and hopefully we will finish it off on a winning note in Mumbai.
On batting with Rahul Dravid
I have always enjoyed batting with Rahul. He is a special player and has done so well for India over so many years. It is always a special feeling when you bat with him. He is so calm and composed. He just tires off the bowlers so you can play your shots.
On the wicket
[It was a] little on the slower side but I think it was a good Test-match wicket. I thought it became a little flat today but it was expected to turn a bit more this morning. But overall, I think it was a good Test-match wicket – a good batting surface on the first two days and also the outfield was quick here so you always get value for your shots.
On the Indian bowlers
All of them are special. I believe as their careers progress they will become real match-winners for the country. It is great to see all the four youngsters do really well.
On Eden Gardens as a venue
I have always [said] that more than the ground it is the people of Kolkata who make it special. They are all very passionate about cricket.
