About MOHAMMAD

Born in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, Mohd. Shami’s journey from playing tennis-ball cricket in his hometown to becoming one of India's premier fast bowlers is a testament to his dedication and natural skill.

Shami made his debut for Bengal in the 2010-11 season of the Ranji Trophy, India's premier domestic first-class competition. His ability to generate pace and movement with the ball quickly caught the attention of selectors, earning him a spot in the Indian squad.

He made his international debut for India in an ODI against Pakistan in January 2013. He made an immediate impact, showcasing his ability to swing the ball at a brisk pace. Shami's Test debut followed later that year against the West Indies, where he announced his arrival with a memorable performance.

Shami also played a crucial role in India's campaign in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. His accurate and incisive bowling earned him accolades, and he finished as one of the tournament's leading wicket-takers. Not just in the ODI format, Shami has been a linchpin of the Indian Test bowling attack. Known for his ability to extract movement from both new and old balls, he has played pivotal roles in numerous Test victories, both at home and overseas.

Mohammed Shami's skill lies in his ability to seam and swing the ball consistently. In the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Shami claimed a memorable hat-trick against Afghanistan, becoming only the second Indian—after Chetan Sharma—to achieve the feat in a 50-over World Cup. On 12 July 2022, he set another milestone by becoming the fastest Indian to reach 150 ODI wickets.

Shami seized his opportunity in the ICC Men's 2023 Cricket World Cup where despite playing just seven matches, he finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 24 scalps, including two five-wicket hauls and a career-best 7-for in the semi-final against New Zealand. From initially being seen as a supporting option, he rose to become India’s standout performer.

Shami continued his remarkable run, becoming the joint second-fastest bowler to reach 200 ODI wickets during his sixth five-wicket haul—this one against Bangladesh—contributing significantly to India’s triumphant Champions Trophy campaign in 2025. His smooth run-up, wrist position, and mastery over reverse swing make him a potent force in all formats of the game. Shami is particularly effective in the death overs in limited-overs cricket.

As one of the key members of India's pace battery, Mohammed Shami's contributions with the ball continue to play a crucial role in the team's success across formats. His ability to consistently deliver breakthroughs and his mastery of seam and swing make him a formidable force in world cricket.
