India U19 win three-match one-day series against SA U19

Jonathan Bird starred with the bat as South Africa Under-19 beat India Under-19 in the third Youth ODI at the Buffalo Park in East London on Monday.

After South Africa Under-19 won the toss and elected to bowl in the last game of the series, Achille Cloete struck twice as India Under-19 lost three wickets before crossing fifty-run mark. Skipper Priyam Garg and N Tilak Varma then steadied the ship as the two added 58 runs together.

The partnership was broken when Garg, who scored 52, got out soon after India Under-19 reached hundred. N Tilak Varma got out soon after. India Under-19 eventually put up 192/8 on the board.

For South Africa Under-19, Pheku Moletsane picked up two wickets and was involved in two run-outs.

Needing 193 runs to win, South Africa Under-19 lost Bryce Parsons in the ninth over after a partnership of 35 runs for the first wicket.

However, Andrew Louw and Bird added 49 runs together for the second wicket before the former and Levert Manje departed in space of a run.

Luke Beaufort and Bird then joined forces and put up a 48-run stand to push South Africa Under-19 past 130. Jack Lees and Bird scored 67 runs together before Yashasvi Jaiswal dismissed Lees for 28.

But Bird, who scored an unbeaten 88, took South Africa Under-19 across the finish line.
