Ranji Trophy 2019-20: Jharkhand, Karnataka seal memorable wins

Jharkhand completed a sensational come-from-behind win while Karnataka edged out Tamil Nadu in a thriller on the final day of the first round of the Ranji Trophy 2019-20.

Here’s a round-up of all the action which unfolded on Thursday:

The fourth and final day’s play of the Group C match between Services and Assam was called off following the curfew in Guwahati.

Haryana, meanwhile, registered an innings and 68-run win over Maharashtra in Lahli on the back skipper Harshal Patel’s nine-wicket haul in the match and in that process, have bagged seven points. Punjab too claimed seven points after chasing down the 68-run target in the fourth innings against Rajasthan in Jaipur.

Goa too opened their account after beating Sikkim by nine wickets. While Sikkim, who were bowled out for 136 in the first innings, put up a spirited batting performance in the second innings, scoring 374 following Goa’s 436/6d, Goa, chasing 75, won the match and pocketed six points.

Mumbai also completed a win on the final day of the match, beating Baroda by 309 runs to pick up six points. While Prithvi Shaw scored a double hundred and skipper Suryakumar Yadav, scored an unbeaten hundred on the third day to power Mumbai to 400-plus total in the second innings, Shams Mulani, who had scored a fifty and picked up six wickets in the first innings, completed a ten-wicket haul in the match after scalping four wickets in the match.

Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, who had recently played out a thrilling Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final, once again had a thrilling encounter and like in the final of the T20 tournament, Karnataka managed to beat Tamil Nadu by 26 runs.

Krishnappa Gowtham, who had earlier scored a crucial fifty and scalped six wickets in the first innings, went on to pick eight wickets, helping Karnataka secure a win.

Meanwhile, Priyank Panchal’s 90 in the second innings helped Gujarat seal an eight-wicket win over Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium to bag six points.

Vidarbha, defending champions, on the other hand were denied an outright win after Andhra’s KS Bharat and Ricky Bhui scored a hundred as the match ended in a draw.

While Vidarbha were denied a win, Jharkhand registered a sensational come-from-behind win over Tripura. Ishank Jaggi and skipper Saurabh Tiwary led Jharkhand’s fightback in the second innings with hundreds before Ashish Kumar’s five-wicket haul sealed Jharkhand’s win.

In the Group A clash in Trivandrum, Delhi and Kerala settled for a draw after Delhi put up a solid show in the second innings with the bat, with Nitish Rana and Kunal Chandela scoring hundreds. Railways, meanwhile, secured three points against Uttar Pradesh on the basis of the first-innings lead.
