Irani Cup: Report: Karnataka vs ROI, Day 4

Gopal’s hat-trick seals an innings win for Karnataka

Karnataka beat Rest of India by an innings and 222 runs to lift the Irani Cup at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The Ranji Trophy champions dominated the game and cantered to a comprehensive win on the fourth day of the game. Skipper Vinay Kumar, who had claimed six wickets in the first innings, claimed four in the second innings to finish with a ten-wicket haul in the match.

After piling on 606 runs in the first innings, they bundled ROI out for a paltry 183. The Harbhajan Singh-led Rest of India had scored 201 in the first innings and succumbed to Vinay Kumar and S Gopal (five wickets) in 57.5 overs in the second innings.

Resuming on the overnight total of 114 for three, ROI lost wickets in a heap on the fourth morning. Vinay Kumar struck a double blow in the ninth over of the morning. He bowled Dinesh Karthik out and trapped Mandeep Singh leg-before a couple of deliveries later to leave the opposition on 142 for five. With Amit Mishra run-out couple of overs later, ROI was in deep trouble.

ROI captain Harbhajan Singh was the next to be sent back by Gopal. And three overs later, Gopal claimed a hat-trick to bowl ROI out and claim victory. The spinner got the better of Baba Aparajith with a flighted delivery, castled Ashoke Dinda and followed up with the wicket of Pankaj Singh to bring curtains down on the match.
