Preview: Eng v Ind - First ODI
What
The first One-Day International of the five-match series between England and India
When
September 3, 2011. The game begins at 14:45 pm, IST.
Where
Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street. England haven’t lost an ODI game at this venue since Sri Lanka beat them by eight wickets in June 2006. Since then, they have recorded wins here against New Zealand, Australia and Pakistan by 114 runs, four wickets and 24 runs respectively.
India have played only a solitary game at this venue (July 2002) which was rained out. Before rain stalled the game, Sachin Tendulkar scored a memorable innings (105*) batting at No. 4 that rescued his side from a precarious score of 52 for three and took them to an imposing 285 for four in 50 overs.
The Teams
India are still to record a win over the hosts on this tour. Sachin Tendulkar’s availability at the top of the batting order will provide a big boost. But not even Tendulkar’s 374 runs at an impressive average of 53.42 could help India avoid the 3-4 ODI series defeat in 2007. Accordingly, India must hope that their entire squad fires in unison so that they can derail the England juggernaut in this final section of the tour.
Ajinkya Rahane, having made a blustery T20I debut at Old Trafford, would be a good opening option with Tendulkar. Rahane’s selection would mean Parthiv Patel will be excluded from the squad. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, announced as a replacement for the injured Gautam Gambhir, is unlikely to get an outing right away in this match. It will be interesting to see whether MS Dhoni persists with young R Vinay Kumar to complement Praveen Kumar and Munaf Patel in the pace attack; Vinay’s ordinary performance (none for 35 in 3.3 overs) in the T20 game could well be a deciding factor.
Alastair Cook takes charge of England’s fortunes heading into the ODI series. Kevin Pietersen has been rested for the ODI series and that makes the England batting line-up look slightly vulnerable. However, with Stuart Broad, Tim Bresnan and James Anderson very much part of the mix, England clearly hold the edge against India. And even though the hosts’ 14-man ODI side bears a closer resemblance to their Test squad rather than their T20 unit, it is still a very young side with Graeme Swann and Jonathan Trott being the only two players above 30.
Trivia
Sachin Tendulkar is on the cusp of scoring his 100th international century but enough has been said about that already. Instead, if Tendulkar reaches a score of 45, he will become the first Indian batsman to complete 1500 ODI runs against England.
James Anderson, England’s second highest wicket-taker in the Test series, is on the verge of a significant landmark in ODIs. One more wicket and Anderson will complete 200 ODI wickets. In doing so, Anderson will become just the second England bowler, after Darren Gough, to accomplish this feat.
