Report: Irani Cup 2013 – Mum vs ROI, Day 5
The batting feast at the Wankhede Stadium ended in a draw as Rest Of India took the Irani Cup on the basis of a first-inning lead over Mumbai. On an uneventful fifth day, Wasim Jaffer (101) slammed a ton to overtake Gundappa Vishwanath as the highest run-scorer in the Irani Cup. Jaffer’s team, however, finished second, with 160 for four while chasing an improbable 507 on the final day.
Despite already having amassed a lead of 413 runs on the fourth day, ROI decided to carry on batting instead of declaring their second innings. Ambati Rayudu, who was batting on 118 overnight, eventually remained unbeaten on 156. Meanwhile, Suresh Raina departed for 71 when he edged Vishal Dabholkar to Ajinkya Rahane at third-man. Harbhajan Singh called his batsmen back when the team total was 389 for five after 120 overs.
As Jaffer began his quest for yet another first-class century, his opening partner, Aditya Tare (11), fell early like he did in the first innings. Jaffer batted with intent and got to his century at a strike-rate of 71. His 101-run unbeaten knock was laced with 10 fours.
Rahane (25) was deceived by Harbhajan Singh with loop and was caught at short-leg. Rohit Sharma (1) was caught at mid-off while going for a big hit off off Pragyan Ojha.
Abishek Nayar was caught behind off Raina’s bowling. In all, Harbhajan backed up his three wickets in the first innings with another two in the second, while his fellow India spinner Ojha, added one wicket to his two in the previous innings.
Brief Scores: Rest Of India 526 and 389/5 beat Mumbai 409 and 160/4 on the basis of a first-innings lead
Player of the Match: Suresh Raina for his batting performance, which saw him score 134 in the first innings and 71 in the second innings of the match.
