Ranji Trophy 2012-13: QF - Round-up, Jan 6
Wasim Jaffer and Sachin Tendulkar put Mumbai in an advantageous position with centuries against Baroda, while Services bowled UP out for 134 on the first day of the Ranji Trophy 2012-13 quarter-finals. Here is the round-up for the day:
Jharkhand vs Punjab in Jamshedpur: Opting to bat first at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand posted 195 for the loss of three wickets on the first day. Although they lost opener Akash Verma with just 10 runs on the board, Rameez Nemat anchored the innings with unbeaten 97-run knock. When play ended today, Ishank Jaggi was not-out on 50 at the other end.
Siddharth Kaul claimed Verma, while Sarabjit Ladda sent back Manish Vardhan and picked the key wicket of Saurabh Tiwary for one.
Saurashtra vs Karnataka in Rajkot: Saurashtra were 272 for the loss of five wickets, after electing to bat at the Saurashtra University Ground against Karnataka. The home team lost the key wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara for 37 with 68 runs on the board, while Sheldon Jackson (83) was the leading run-getter for them on Day 1. At stumps, Aarpit Vasavada was one run short of his half-century with Chirag Jani batting at the other end on 13.
Abhimanyu Mithun claimed two wickets for Karnataka, while HS Sharath, KP Appanna and K Gowtham claimed a wicket each.
Mumbai vs Baroda in Mumbai: After Mumbai lost Kaustubh Pawar and Hiken Shah early on, veterans Wasim Jaffer and Sachin Tendulkar dominated the day’s the proceedings with a 234-run partnership. The duo posted centuries to take Mumbai to 272 at the end of first day’s play at the Wankhede Stadium.
Although Tendulkar departed for 108 later in the day, Jaffer remained not-out on 137 with Dhawal Kulkarni at the other end. Murtuja Vahora who claimed Pawar in the morning castled the Little Master later, while Bharghav Bhatt dismissed Shah.
UPCA vs SSCB in Indore: On an eventful first day at the Holkar Cricket Stadium, Services bundled out UP for 134 and led by 20 runs with five wickets in hand at the end of day’s play.
After opting to field, the UP bowlers ran through the Services’ line-up with clinical precision. Nishan Singh (three wickets) got the ball rolling with the wickets of Mukul Dagar and Mohammad Kaif. Shadab Nazar and Suraj Yadav helped wrap up the opposition with five and two wickets respectively.
In reply, Services were 154 for five in the first innings with Rajat Paliwal and Sarabjit Singh batting on 36 and 31 respectively.
