Ranji Trophy 2012-13: Round-up, Dec 29
Gujarat, UP and Services were bowled out on Day 1 of the ninth round of Ranji Trophy 2012-13 by Mumbai Odisha and Jharkand respectively. Here is the round up for the day:
Mumbai vs Gujarat in Mumbai: In a must-win game at the DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai bowled Gujarat out for 244 after electing to field. After ace pacer Zaheer Khan leading the team in the absence of Ajit Agarkar claimed Gujarat opener Smit Patil early in the innings to give the home team their first breakthrough. Although Parthiv Patel anchored the innings with a century, the Mumbai attack claimed wickets at regular intervals to bowl the visitors out on the first day. Zaheer and Javed Khan picked two wickets each, while Ankit Chavan claimed three and Dhawal Kulkarni and Abhishek Nayar took one apiece.
At stumps, Mumbai were 24 for one after Kaustubh Pawar was sent back by Rakesh Dhruv. Wasim Jaffer who opened the innings with Pawar was unbeaten on six.
Saurashtra vs MPCA in Rajkot: Half-centuries by Sheldon Jackson and Aarpit Vasavada and an unbeaten 41 by Kamlesh Makvana took Saurashtra to 212 for nine at the end of first day’s play after opting to bat against MP.
After Shitanshu Kotak was sent back by Anand Rajan, Ishwar Pandey dealt twin blows (three wickets) with the key wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara and Jaydev Shah to leave the visitors reeling on 37 for three early in the innings. Rameez Khan and Ankit Sharma then chipped in with two wickets each, while Ajay Rajput took one.
Railways vs Bengal in Kolkata: Put in to bat, Railways were 214 for nine at the end of first day’s play against hosts Bengal in the ninth round of the tournament. After Wriddhiman Saha opted to bowl, Sourav Sarkar got Bengal their first breakthrough in the 27th over with the wicket of Amit Paunikar who had scored a half-century for Railways. Sarkar later claimed two more scalps, while Shib Paul picked two and Iresh Saxena, Sandipan Das and Veer Pratap Singh chipped in with a wicket each.

Karnataka vs Maharashtra in Pune: Unbeaten centuries by CM Gautam (132*) and Stuart Binny (115*) powered Karnataka to 306 for the loss of four wickets at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium after they were put in to bat by the home team.
UPCA vs Odisha in Cuttack: Opting to field first at the Barabati Stadium, Odisha’s Deepak Behera ran through the UP line up to help bundle out for visitors for 160 on Day 1 of the four-day match. The pacer claimed six wickets while Biplab Samantray who set the ball rolling with the wicket of opener Tanmay Srivastava and Basant Mohanty claimed two each.
Floundering on 70 for the loss of five wickets when play ended today Odisha were neck and neck with UP. Led by Imtiaz Ahmed (two wickets) the UP bowlers dealt early blows to leave the home team in a precarious position. Haldar Das (15*) and Samantray (4*) were looking to the take the team forward when play ended.
Delhi vs Vidarbha in Nagpur: Half-centuries by Unmukt Chand (82), Mohit Sharma and Mithun Manhas propelled Delhi to 254 for four at the end of Day 1 after Shikhar Dhawan opted to bat against Vidarbha.
Vaibhav Rawal and Vikas Tokas were batting on 16 and five respectively when stumps were called.
Andhra vs Kerala in Kadapa: After skipper Rohan Prem opted to bowl first, Kerala dealt early blows to leave Andhra reeling on 34 for the loss of three wickets. But the middle order comprising veteran cricketer Amol Muzumdar helped revive the Andhra innings. Muzumdar who earlier became the first batsman to complete 9000 Ranji runs was one run short of his century when play ended today. Involved in two vital stands with Bodapati Sumanth (47) for 91 runs and Syed Shahbuddin (49) for 95 runs took the team through the day.
Sandeep Warrier, U Manukrishnan and KJ Rakesh claimed two scalps each for Kerala, while S Sreesanth picked one wicket.
SSCB vs Jharkhand in Delhi (Palam): Ajay Yadav and Jharkhand skipper Shahbaz Nadeem picked five and three wickets respectively to help bowl out Services for 185 on Day 1 of the ongoing ninth round match. SSCB captain Soumik Chatterjee made a valiant 97 as wickets crumbled at the other end.
When play ended today, Jharkhhand were four without loss with Akash Verma and Nadeem in the middle.
J&K vs Tripura in Jammu: No play

Goa vs Assam in Goa: Although Goa lost opener Rohan Belekar early in the innings, Amogh Desai powered the host’s to 264 for three with an unbeaten century. He found able allies in opener and captain Sagun Kamat (70) and No 4 bat Reagan Pinto (61). When stumps were called Manvindar Bisla was batting on 22 at the other end.
Rajasthan vs Hyderabad in Jaipur: Rajasthan had posted 274 for the loss of five wickets by the end of first day’s play at the KL Saini Ground. Vineet Saxena scored 209-ball 84 and was the top scorer for the home team on the first day.
