Mumbai, 15 Nov: The much-anticipated India-England Test series got underway today. After the 4-0 drubbing that England dished out to the Indians last year, Day 1 of this particular series belonged to Team India. Dashing opener, Virender Sehwag, flashed his blade the way only he can and gave the hosts a leg up with a timely, brisk ton. Even his opening partner, Gautam Gambhir, who although not as flashy as Sehwag, got to 2,000 runs on Indian soil during the course of his innings.

For the visitors the only respite came from Graeme Swann's probing spin bowling. The wily tweaker, who claimed all four Indian scalps to fall today, went past the legendary Jim Laker to become England's most successful off-spinner of all time. Here are these and some more milestones that were passed today

  • This was the 104th Test match between India and England – 52nd in India and second at Ahmedabad.

  • MS Dhoni has now opted to bat first on all the nine occasions when he has won the toss in a home Test (won 5, drew 3).

  • Nick Compton was making his Test debut for England. He became 654th player to represent England in Test cricket.

  • Nick’s grandfather Denis had also played for England. He thus provided the fifth instance of a grandson following the footsteps of his grandfather in Test cricket. The others on this list are: George Headley (WI) and Dean Headley (Eng); Jahangir Khan (India) and Bazid Khan (Pak); Vic Richardson and Ian, Greg and Trevor Chappell (Aus); Maurice and Chris Tremlett (Eng).

  • Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag put on their 11th century stand for the first wicket – a new record for India. Chetan Chauhan and Sunil Gavaskar had put on 10 century stands.

  • Gautam Gambhir, while on 37, completed his 2,000 Test runs on Indian soil. He became the 14th Indian and second left-hander, after Sourav Ganguly (3,180 runs), to do so.

  • Virender Sehwag (117) scored his 23rd Test hundred – his 13th at home in 47 Tests and his first in two years and 30 innings. His last Test hundred had come against New Zealand also at Ahmedabad – 173 off 199 balls in November 2010.

  • The 90-ball hundred by Virender Sehwag is the third fastest for India against England. Kapil Dev had taken 86 balls for his hundred at Kanpur in 1981-82, while Mohammad Azharuddin took 87 balls to get to the three-figure mark at Lord’s in 1990.

  • Among the 9 fastest Test hundreds by Indian batsmen, five have come off Sehwag’s bat!

  • Graeme Swann, with the wicket of Gautam Gambhir, became the most successful off-spinner for England, moving ahead of Jim Laker’s tally of 193. Leading off-spinners for England are: Graeme Swann (195), Jim Laker (193), Fred Titmus (153), John Emburey (147), David Allen (122) and Ray Illingworth (122).

  • Virat Kohli (19) failed to score a fifty for the first time in a home Test innings. His scores in previous five innings are: 52 and 63 vs West Indies (Mumbai, Wankhede in November 2011), 58 vs New Zealand (Hyderabad in August 2012) and 103 & 51* (Bengaluru in August 2012).

  • India’s total of 323/4 is their highest on the opening day of a home Test against England. The previous highest was 296 for seven at Chennai in 1961-62. It just failed to surpass India’s highest ever opening day total against England – home or away. India had made 324/4 at The Oval in 1990.
