Ranji Trophy 2012-13: Round-up, Nov 12
Mumbai, Nov 12: Delhi, Assam and Punjab registered victories in the second round of the Ranji Trophy 2012-13. The last day of the second round also witnessed Ravindra Jadeja slam a triple-ton for Saurashtra against Gujarat in a drawn match. Here is the round up for the day:
Rajasthan vs Mumbai in Jaipur: The KL Saini Ground in Jaipur witnessed a draw between Rajasthan and Mumbai. In response to Rajasthan’s 478, Mumbai resuming on 360 for three, posted 579 to claim three points from the match. Abhishek Nayar scored his second century of the tournament in as many matches while batting with the lower order. He was unbeaten on 105 when the match ended today, while Hiken Shah was sent back for 140 earlier in the day.
Rituraj Singh and Aniket Choudhary picked up three wickets each, while Gajendra Singh took two. Pankaj Singh and Ashok Menaria claimed one wicket apiece.
Hyderabad vs MPCA in Hyderabad: MP posted 432, before declaring their first innings earlier on the fourth day of their match against hosts Hyderabad. Resuming their first innings on 265 for five, Jalaj Saxena went on to make 142, before being sent back by Syed Quadri.
In reply, Hyderabad who had made 341 in their first innings were eight for no loss when the match was called off. MP finished with three points on the basis of their first innings lead.
Gujarat vs Saurashtra in Surat: Ravindra Jadeja’s triple-ton was the highlight of the drawn encounter between Saurashtra and Gujarat. He has now joined VVS Laxman and Wasim Jaffer, who are the only other batsman to have scored two triple-centuries in the Ranji Trophy. Saurashtra’s Sagar Jogiyani was yet another batsman to play a big innings. The top-order bat made 282, before being run out. When stumps were called, Jadeja was unbeaten on 303 with Sheldon Jackson on 25. They ended their first innings on 716 for three, after surpassing Gujarat’s 600 for nine declared to gain three points, while Gujarat got one from this second round match at the Lalabhai Contractor Stadium.
Punjab vs Bengal in Mohali: With a thumping innings and 27-run victory over Bengal at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali, Punjab claimed seven points from the match. They have 14 points from two games now. Manpreet Gony and Siddarth Kaul ran through the visitors’ line-up to wrap up Bengal’s second innings for 226 on the last day.
Gony finished with five for 41, while Kaul claimed four scalps and Bipul Sharma chipped in with one wicket in the second innings.
Tamil Nadu vs Karnataka in Chennai: An unbeaten double-century by Ganesh Satish and 130 not out by CM Gautam helped Karnataka pull off a draw against TN at Chepauk. Resuming their first innings on 239 for three on the last day of the match in reply to TN’s 538 for four declared, Karnataka posted 562 for six to claim three points.
Maharashtra vs UPCA in Pune: In a high-scoring match at the at Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium both teams earned one point since a first innings result could not be achieved.
In response to Maharashtra’s mammoth 764 for six declared, UPCA were 669 for seven when the match was called off on the final day.
Delhi vs Odisha in Delhi: Delhi beat Odisha by 10 wickets to collect seven points from their second game of the Ranji Trophy 2012-13 season. After bowling the visitors out for 269 in the second innings earlier today, the hosts reached the 82-run target in 15 overs. Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Unmukt Chand score 55 and 23 respectively to help the hosts register an outright win.
Earlier Delhi’s Pawan Suyal claimed a fiver, while Sumit Narwal took three wickets.
Himachal vs SSCB in Amtar: Himachal collected three points on the basis of their first innings lead against Services at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium, while Services received one point from the encounter. Resuming on 46 for two, Services were 314 for four in their second innings when play was called off. Soumya Swain was unbeaten on 118 with Yashpal Singh on 59 when play ended.
HP’s Rishi Dhawan took two wickets, while Vikramjeet Malik and Gurvinder Singh picked one scalp each.
Goa vs J&K in Goa: Goa received three points on the basis of their first innings lead in the drawn match at Porvorim. Resuming on 258 for two, Goa declared their first innings on 406 on the last day of the match. In reply J&K who had made 338 in their first innings were 95 for six when play ended today.
Shadab Jakati claimed four-wicket haul for Goa.
Jharkhand vs Assam in Jamshedpur: A fiver by J Syed Mohammad and a four-for by Arlen Konwar in Jharkhand's second innings helped Assam register a 53-run victory over the hosts and claim six points.
Chasing 213 to win, the hosts resumed their innings on 56 for two, but they were skittled out for 159. Jharkhand’s lower order caved in without much resistance for the second time in the game at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur.
With two out of two wins, Assam now have 13 points.
Baroda in Vidarbha in Vadodara: Home team Baroda received three points on the basis of their first innings lead from the drawn match against Vidarbha. The visitors, who were three for one when play commenced in the morning, finished the day on 218 for four in the second innings.
Andhra vs Tripura in Anantapur: AP picked three points from the drawn match against Tripura at the Rural Development Trust Stadium. Resuming their second innings on 21 for no loss in reply to AP’s first innings score of 436 batting second, Tripura were 170 for four when play was called off on the fourth day. Having scored 260 in their first innings, they received one point for the loss on the first innings.
