Ranji Trophy 2012-13: Round-up, Nov 2
Mumbai, Nov 2: The first day of the Ranji Trophy 2012-13 season saw centuries by the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Ajinkya Rahane, Irfan Pathan, Parthiv Patel and Aditya Waghmode among others. Meanwhile, Umesh Yadav and Timir Chanda picked fivers to kick start the season. Here is the day’s wrap up.
Bengal vs Rajasthan in Kolkata: Put in to bat by the defending champions, Bengal were 187 for four after 59 overs. Opener Subhomoy Das missed out on a century by five runs after being trapped lbw by Pankaj Singh. Manoj Tiwary was the second highest scorer for the hosts on Day 1 with 42 runs.
Pankaj Singh who has been one of the key bowlers for Rajasthan in recent times picked three for 30.
Punjab vs Hyderabad in Mohali: Opting to field first Punjab claimed seven wickets on Day 1 to leave the visiting Hyderabad team on 244 for seven when stumps were called. Akshath Reddy was the highest run-getter for Hyderabad with 63 runs. When play ended IM Khaleel was batting on 38 and Pragyan Ojha was on four.
MM Grewal and Amitoze Singh took three wickets each, while SB Sharma claimed the only wicket of Hanuma Vihari.
MPCA vs Gujarat in Indore: Asked to bat, Parthiv Patel powered Gujarat to 327 for the loss of five wickets with his 162. His 205-ball stay at the crease included 26 boundaries. He was ably supported by Y Venugopal Rao (45) and Manprit Juneja (42*). Akshar Patel (12*) was in the middle with Juneja when play was called off.
Anand Rajan claimed two wickets for Madhya Pradesh, while Ishwar Pandey, Gaurav Yadav and Jalaj Saxena picked one each.
Odisha vs Tamil Nadu in Cuttack: In this Group B encounter, only 31 overs of play took place after the hosts decided to field first.
Tamil Nadu opener Abhinav Mukund was unbeaten on 21 with teen batting sensation Baba Aparajith on three when play was called off.
TN were 66 for two with Basant Mohanty and Alok Mangaraj taking a wicket a piece by the end of day's play.
Haryana vs Vidarbha in Lahli: The Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium in Rohtak witnessed a dramatic collapse of the home side as they were skittled out for 55. Opening the bowling for Vidarbha, Sandeep Singh set the ball rolling with the wicket of Nitin Saini in the fifth over. The pacer along with Umesh Yadav ran through the home team in 37. 1 overs.
Singh claimed four while Yadav bagged five wickets; Shrikant Wagh picked one scalp.
At the end of Day 1, the visitors were leading by 23 runs with eight wickets in hand. They had lost Faiz Fazal and Aniruddha Chore, and were 78 for two with Shiv Sundar Das and Shalabh Shrivastava at the crease.
Baroda vs Karnataka in Baroda: The hosts were reeling at 88 for four until Irfan Pathan joined opener Aditya Waghmode at the crease to rescue the Baroda innings. The duo slammed centuries and both men remained unbeaten on 121 and 105 respectively when stumps were called.
At the end of day’s play Baroda were 308 for four. Stuart Binny had claimed two wickets for the visitors while Vinay Kumar and KP Appanna took one each.
UPCA vs Delhi in Ghaziabad: Opting to field first, UPCA restricted the star-studded Delhi line-up comprising Virender Sehwag (25), Gautam Gambhir (32), Virat Kohli (13) and Unmukt Chand (28) to 235. Imtiaz Ahmed finished with a five-wicket haul, while Praveen Kumar took three and Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ali Murtuza picked one wicket each. Punit Bisht was the top-scorer for Delhi with 52.
The Sureh Raina-led UPCA were 40 for one with Mukul Dagar and Mohammad Kaif at the crease when the day ended.
Himachal Pradesh vs Kerala in Amtar: Electing to bat first Kerala posted 196 for eight in 73.4 overs before the end of day’s play. Sanju Viswanadh was not out on 100 with Prashanth Parmeshwaran on 13 at the other end at the end of Day 1.
Rishi Dhawan picked three wickets for Kerala, while VS Malik and Gurvinder Singh took two each.
Andhra Pradesh vs SSCB in Anantapur: In their first game of the tournament against Services, Andhra opted to field at the Rural Development Trust Stadium. However, in the 28 overs that were bowled on the first day they claimed five wickets to leave Services struggling on 73 for five at stumps. Rajat Paliwal and Sarabjit Singh were batting on 10 and naught respectively when play ended.
T Atchuta Rao and Duvvarapu Shivkumar took two wickets each for AP.
Assam vs Tripura at Guwahati: Dheeraj Jadhav struck 127 not out to take Assam to 220 for five at the end of Day 1 after Assam chose to bat. Timir Chanda claimed all the five wickets that fell today to finish with a fiver for Tripura.
J & K vs Jharkhand at Jammu: Opting to bat first on their home ground J & K posted 195 in their first innings. Shahbaz Nadeem and Shankar Rao put the visitors on top with three wickets each.
Chasing the total Jharkhand were trailing by 114 runs with nine wickets in hand when day’s play ended.
Mumbai vs Railways in Mumbai: Sachin Tendulkar and Ajinkya Rahane struck centuries against Railways after being asked to bat first by Sanjay Bangar. For the full report click here
