Report: Eng vs Ind – M8, Women’s WT20
Galle, Sep 29: India’s loss to England today marked the end of their campaign in the2012 ICC Women’s World Twnety20. The England women coasted to a nine-wicket win over India in the league encounter at the Galle Cricket Stadium. India will now play their last group match against Pakistan.
Chasing 117, England reached the target with 17 balls to spare. Opening the batting for England, skipper Charlotte Edwards led the team to victory with an unbeaten half-century. She was ably supported by Laura Marsh, who after contributing with the ball smashed 39 off 35 with five boundaries and a six. Meanwhile, Sarah Taylor smashed a 15-ball 25.
Earlier, after opting to bat first, India lost Amita Sharma early in the innings. However, opener Poonam Raut and Mithali Raj built a 75-run partnership to set up a good platform. But after Marsh dismissed Raut for 51, the rest of the line-up failed to build on the platform. After being two down for 79 at the end of fifteen overs, they added 37 runs off 30 balls
Although Raj held up one end she kept losing partners at the other end. Harmanpreet Kaur was removed for three by Arran Brindle, while Holly Colvin dismissed Jhulan Goswami for 10. Marsh then followed up with wicket of N Niranjana in the next over. Reema Malohtra, who came to the crease in the penultimate over, remained unbeaten on five. Raj was run-out for 35 off the last ball of the innings as India reached 116 for the loss of six wickets.
