Preview: Eng v Ind – Match 10, ICC World T20
What
The 10th match of the 2012 ICC World Twenty20, which is between England and India.
When
September 23, 2012. The game begins at 7:30 pm, IST.
Where
The R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Both teams have played their opening group games against Afghanistan at this venue, though it must be said that England put on a far more dominating display (and won by 116 runs) in their game against the Afghans than India (who won by 23 runs).
The Teams
Although England put in a commanding performance to romp to an easy win against Afghanistan, they will be tested against India in conditions that definitely suit their opponents. As formidable as the English batting line-up looks, their ability to play quality spin remains in contention. The bowling department though appears well served with Steven Finn, Jade Dernbach and Stuart Broad in the ranks. England may play the extra pacer (Tim Bresnan) given the Indian batsmen’s problems against the short ball in the last couple of ICC T20 World Cups.
India’s biggest problems lie up front. They need Zaheer Khan to give them breakthrough while opening the bowling attack, and they need Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir to put on a grand opening stand while opening the innings. Also, with the vulnerability of the English side against spin, MS Dhoni could very well opt for Harbhajan Singh in the playing XI instead of playing seven specialist batsmen.
Key Players
Craig Kieswetter will be eager to make himself be counted against India. The English wicketkeeper, who also opens for his side, was bowled for a duck against Afghanistan. He enjoys a strike-rate of 130.43 against India in T20Is – his best he does against any opponent. If Kieswetter gets going, India will definitely feel the pressure.
When England toured India at the end of last year, R Ashwin’s 10 wickets from 47.1 overs of bowling at an economy-rate of 4.28 played a vital role in helping the hosts whitewash the visitors 5-0. England’s success in this game could, therefore, depend on how effectively they handle India’s current No.1 off-spinner.
Trivia:
-
Virat Kohli has scored fifties in his last three Twenty20 internationals. If he scores another fifty tomorrow, he will equal Brendon McCullum’s world record of four consecutive fifties in Twenty20 Internationals. McCullum did so in 2008 and 2009.
-
Virat Kohli needs only nine runs to become the highest run-getter in all international cricket in 2012. He will surpass Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara’s tally of 1776 runs.
- England will become the fourth team after Pakistan, New Zealand and Australia to play 50 Twenty20 Internationals.
