SL v Ind: Series Averages
Mumbai, Aug 6: Getting back on the cricket field after a rare 45-day break, Team India could have either begun the new season rusty and out of touch or rejuvenated and hungry. With a 4-1 victory against hosts Sri Lanka in a five-match ODI series, MS Dhoni’s men showed they had utilised the rest to its optimum.
India – Batting Averages
The series win and subsequent rise to the No. 2 spot in the ICC ODI rankings was thanks to the combined brilliance of various individuals, but the man who stood out was Virat Kohli. Kohli is riding the crest of a wave of form. The volume of runs, and the pace with which he is scoring them, has put him at the top of the ODI run-getters’ list in the last three years. The 23-year-old, making the best of his good touch, added 296 runs at an average of 74 in the recently completed series. Gautam Gambhir was, as usual, the ice to Sehwag’s fire at the top of the order and India’s go-to man in a crisis. Suresh Raina, meanwhile, played the chalenging role of finisher with commendable consistency.
Kolhi, Gambhir and Raina were the pillars holding up India’s strong batting performance.

India – Bowling and Fielding Averages
At the start of the series, India’s bowling attack was touted as their weak link. While Zaheer Khan was the obvious leader of the pack, it was another left-arm paceman who led the charge of India’s bowling. Irfan Pathan, playing his first full ODI series after returning from an injury layoff, topped India’s bowling charts with eight wickets. Joint highest wicket-taker with SL’s Thisara Perera and Lasith Malinga, Irfan was the only bowler to have taken a five-wicket haul in the series. He was well supported by the other quick bowlers and spinners – part-timers included.

MS Dhoni pouched six catches and effected a stumping in the series to take his ODI dismissal tally against Sri Lanka to 73 – the most by any wicketkeeper.
Sri Lanka – Batting Averages
Kumar Sangakkara started off the series for the hosts with a sublime century in the first ODI. He was easily Sri Lanka’s most in-form batsman during the first three matches with 206 runs at an incredible average of 103, before pulling out of the series with a fractured finger. The effect of the blow to the team was reduced to a certain extent by opener Upul Tharanga (177 runs at 44.25), who, according to skipper Mahela Jayawardene, batted at his best in the series.

Sri Lanka – Bowling and Fielding Averages
Sri Lanka’s most lethal weapon, Lasith Malinga, seems to lose his bite a bit against the Indian batsmen. This series was a mixed bag for the slinger; he picked a joint-highest eight wickets at an expensive economy rate of 6.24. Lanka’s best bowler in the series was Thisara Perera, who claimed the prized scalps of Sehwag, Kohli and Raina in the second ODI, the only match the hosts won. He was named Man-of-the-Match for his effort
