Team has always backed me: Perera
Hambantota, July 24: After losing the series opener against India by 21 runs, Sri Lanka bounced back to pummel India by nine wickets in the second ODI. The win was inspired by a brilliant spell by Thisara Perera who got rid of three top-order Indian batsmen – Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina without conceding a single run.
For his excellent bowling figures of 3 for 19 in eight overs which included three maiden overs, the Lankan pacer was adjudged the Man of the Match. On receiving the award, the 23-year-old expressed gratitude towards his team-mates for believing in him.
“I’m very happy with this performance. I want to thank my team for backing me right through. We did all the right things but we have to go a long way in the series.” Perera said.
Although his main role in the team is with the ball, Perera is also known for his use of the long handle to score useful runs in the lower-order. Before anyone could thrust him with the tag of all-rounder, thus adding pressure on him, Perera made his preferences very clear, saying, “My first priority is bowling”.
When being asked about his match-winning spell to help his team draw level in the series, the soft-spoken Lankan paceman insisted all he did was concentrate on bowling the right line and length. “I don’t think about my performance. I have to bowl in right areas and make the right decisions.”
