What

The fourth match of the 2012 Asia Cup that features Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. India play hosts Bangladesh in this encounter.

When

March 16, 2012. The game begins at 13:30 IST.

Where

Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur. In the last clash between the two sides here, India handed Bangladesh an 87-run defeat; the opening game of the 2011 ICC ODI World Cup belonged unequivocally to India who raised a mammoth score of 370. Since then, nine of the 14 matches played at this venue have been won by the team batting first. In this tournament, too, the team batting first has won the first two matches of the competition. Going by those facts, there is a definite case for the captain winning the toss choosing to bat first.

The Teams

Bangladesh will expect an improved performance from their opening bowlers, Mashrafe Mortaza and Shafiul Islam, who had only one wicket to show from their combined 18 overs of bowling in the game against Pakistan. To make things worse, the pair conceded 104 runs (economy-rate 5.77) before the Bangladesh spinners were able to pull things back. Additionally, captain Mushfiqur Rahim, whose last five ODI innings have only produced a highest score of 11, will have to lead by example if the batsmen are expected to put on a better display in the game against India.

While the Indian batting definitely looks well settled, the bowling could do better. Ashoke Dinda’s extra pace might just be the kind of bite India need on the Mirpur surface to unsettle the Bangladesh batsmen, with Irfan Pathan and Praveen Kumar providing the backup pace support. As far as the No. 7 slot is concerned, this game might also provide the Indians the ideal chance to play Yusuf Pathan ahead of Ravindra Jadeja before the crunch games set in.

Key Players

Shakib Al Hasan has been Bangladesh’s talisman for quite some time now. He averages 34.96 with the bat in ODIs and has more than 150 wickets in the format at an economy-rate of 4.26. Even in the hosts’ opening game against Pakistan, Shakib’s all-round performance, two for 41 and a 66-ball 64, singlehandedly kept Bangladesh in the contest that they eventually lost by 21 runs.

On a relatively good batting track at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Irfan Pathan was the only bowler to concede less than four runs an over in the game against Sri Lanka. Despite the Lankans looking for quick runs, Pathan was able to bowl a steady line, mix things up and was eventually rewarded with four wickets from 8.1 overs. India fans will hope that performance points to a resurgent Pathan, back to top form.

Trivia

Bangladesh – The last time Bangladesh beat India was at Port-of-Spain in the 2007 World Cup. Since then they have lost eight consecutive matches against India.

India – Bangladesh is the only Test-playing nation against which Sachin Tendulkar has not scored an ODI hundred. In 10 innings of 11 matches, Tendulkar’s highest against Bangladesh is 82* in the 2004 Asia Cup.
