Sorry to miss out: Mathews
Mirpur, Mar 13: Right-arm medium pacer Angelo Mathews, named vice-captain of the resurgent Sri-Lankan side, has been ruled out of the Asia Cup encounter against India due to injury.
Excerpts from his brief chat with the media prior to the match:
On missing out on Sri Lanka’s opening game of the Asia Cup
Unfortunately, I am nursing a calf injury so it will take a few days to get on track.
On how frustrating is was to sit out games because of injury concerns
I had a good run in Australia as well but was unfortunate to miss out [on] the three finals. I guess I am a bit unfortunate [when it comes to] finals; I missed out on the World Cup 2011 final as well as the three finals in Australia [in the CB Series]. And I have to miss out one or two games here. So yes, it is very frustrating.
On Sri Lanka’s good form coming into the Asia Cup
We played really good cricket in Australia. The guys played with a lot of freedom and we gave our best and we came [up with our] best in Australia. Unfortunately, the third final didn’t come go way but it was really exciting cricket to watch.
On whether jet lag was a concern for the Sri Lankan side
Not really. We have been here for the past three days; we have come here straight from Adelaide. We have had a good rest and we are up to the challenge.
On whether he would be fit for the other games
Yes, hopefully I will be able to play the second game. If not, the third game, definitely.
