Ahmedabad, Mar 12: Australia captain Jodie Fields played an important role with the bat as the visitors beat India by 30 runs in the first ODI of the three-match series. With an unbeaten 64, Fields helped her team post a competitive total after opting to bat first. With two ODIs to go, the skipper feels her team needs to work on their bowling.

Excerpts from her post-match press conference:

On what made the difference in the match

It was very important that we got 230 today; we needed that in the end. But I think we’ve got some improvements to do with our bowling and if we can do that, we’ll do a lot better in the next game.

On getting the crucial breakthroughs

I think we lost our discipline with our bowling a bit; in the next game we’d like to improve on that. But once we got that wicket, it got us a bit more alive again and got us back on our way, so I’m really happy.

On the pitch

Our assessment of the wicket was that it was quite hard for the new batters when they first come in. But if you stay for a while and get used to the conditions, it is quite good for batting. Probably in the afternoon it got a bit flatter and a bit lower, but I am pretty happy with the score that we made. We’d obviously like to improve on that for the next game and also be a bit more disciplined with our bowling.

On taking the lead in the series

It’s great to get the first win on the board; it’s good momentum for us going into Mumbai. We’ll be looking to play well in the second game and hopefully win the series there. But our aim is to win the series 3-0 and keep the momentum rolling into the T20 series.

On her batting performance

It was good today. I suppose I don’t often have too many opportunities to bat for long periods but it was my highest ODI score so I’m very happy with how I was hitting the ball. I feel like all the training I’ve been doing is paying off.

On the strategy for the upcoming matches

I think just to focus on game two. As I said, just to be a little bit more disciplined with our bowling. I think we were a bit asleep in the middle but we came back at the end well and I think if we can play well for 50 overs, we should do well.
