Happy to get two points: Mahela
Adelaide, Feb 14: Sri Lanka gained their first points in the CB series after their match against India ended in a tie. Skipper Mahela Jayawardene rued the sub-par score and misfields but believed that his side could pick themselves up in the forthcoming matches to book a spot in the finals.
Excerpts from Jayawardene’s post-match media interaction:
On the close match
It was going both ways and probably the last ball [the advantage] was was with us. But when you have MS [Dhoni] batting through the innings, it is always [difficult]. We made so many mistakes but still to get two points, we are happy with that.
On his incredulous reaction to the result
One ball, four to get, you back yourself to win the game; but three runs to tie [the match]–that’s how it goes. We never probably had this game wrapped up. 230 probably wasn’t enough. We dropped catches, missed run-outs but at least we were in it so we can take a lot of positives out of this and keep fighting for every point.
On needing a win soon to stay in the series
It is. We have been losing by small margins. We have been playing good cricket so if we get that one win, [the] momentum will shift our way and with two or three wins, we might be in there. But we just have to take it one game at a time and concentrate. Try and finish games off.
On Lasith Malinga
Brilliant! You always back him to do the job for you, that’s why I kept him till the end. He almost did it for us. All-round it was a great effort we can learn from this.
