What

The fifth One-Day International of the tri-series competition featuring Australia, India and Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka, still winless in the series, take on India, buoyed by their thrilling win over the hosts in the February 12 encounter.

When

February 14, 2012. The game begins at 08:50 IST.

Where

Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. Based on the match played here between Australia and India, the wicket should once again be conducive to some good stroke play with a 250-plus score very much in the reckoning for the team batting first. The side batting second will be encouraged by the fact that the Indians chased down 270 against the hosts without the required run-rate ever getting out of hand.

The Teams

The blame for Sri Lanka’s dry run so far squarely lies on their top-order batsmen. Between Upul Tharanga, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, the Lankans have got only 93 runs cumulatively in two matches. Tharanga’s twin failures (scores of four and five respectively) automatically put the rest of the batting under pressure. It’s time turned in a solid innings for the rest of the Lankan batsmen to build on.

India are comfortably placed just behind the hosts with two wins from three games. If their middle-order had them worried based on performances in their first couple of encounters, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni all came good against Australia at Adelaide to silence their detractors. Now if only Ravindra Jadeja (55 runs and one wicket in three matches) can turn in a couple of good all-round performances in the remainder of the league stage, the Indians will find themselves cruising into the finals.

Key Players

Angelo Mathews has had an outstanding couple of game in the CB series so far. The Sri Lankan scored an unbeaten 33 against India at Perth to take his team’s total to a fighting 233 for eight and then scored a 76-ball 64 against Australia in the following game as the Lankans fell short of the victory target by five runs. His four wickets (economy-rate 3.64) also make him the leading wicket-taker for Sri Lanka in the competition.

Umesh Yadav, who played his first ODI game of the CB series competition against Australia in the previous match, impressed with figures of 10-1-49-2. Since Yadav has played just one ODI against Sri Lanka, way back in May 2010, he may well catch the Lankans by surprise given his considerable improvement as a pace bowler over the last few months in international cricket.

Trivia:

Sri Lanka – Of all the teams that have played at least one ODI at Adelaide, Sri Lanka have the second-poorest win percentage. The Lankans have won only three of their 15 matches played over here, which gives them a win percentage of 20. Only Zimbabwe, who have lost all the three ODIs that they have played at this venue, have fared worse than Sri Lanka.

India – Yesterday, India won just their first ODI encounter against the Australians at Adelaide in five outings, but their record against other sides at this venue is far better. Of the seven times India have encountered a non-Australian side in ODIs here, they have emerged victorious on six occasions (win % 85.71).
