Preview: Sri Lanka v India – 2nd ODI
What
The second One-Day International of the tri-series competition featuring Australia, India and Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka take on India in this encounter.
When
February 08, 2012. The game begins at 09:50 IST.
Where
Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA), Perth. Two of the last three ODI matches played at this venue have seen the team batting first score a total of 250-plus and win the game. On the one occasion that the side batting first posted a score of less than 250, the opposition just about scraped to a two-wicket win with four balls to spare.
Sri Lanka could struggle to cope with the pace and bounce of the WACA wicket in their first match of the series, but their recently completed a 45-day tour to South Africa should help them acclimatise.
The Teams
Despite India’s ordinary run in Australia so far, Sri Lanka appear to be the team in greater turmoil. Tillakaratne Dilshan, who led Sri Lanka for nine months after the ICC ODI World Cup, resigned from captaincy last month following series defeats in both Tests and ODIs in all his four assignments. As a result, Sri Lanka seem to have taken a backward step with Mahela Jayawardene reinstated as captain; the veteran batsman had resigned from the post in 2009. It will be interesting to see how the Sri Lankan outfit responds to this crisis situation and whether Jayawardene can get them to bounce back in his comeback series as captain.
Having won the second T20I game against Australia on February 3, India put up a rather ordinary performance in the first tri-series ODI against the hosts. Their bowlers bowled far too many loose deliveries, which allowed the Australians to smash their way past a score of 200 in a rain-truncated game. The team management will perhaps look to augment the pace attack; the inclusion of Irfan Pathan will give the side the benefit of a genuine third pacer who can bat as well.
Key Players
Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Chandimal emerged as Sri Lanka’s highest run-getter in the recently concluded five-match ODI series against South Africa, which the visitors lost 2-3. The 22-year-old Chandimal, who bats at No. 4 ahead of the more accomplished Jayawardene, scored 211 runs from five innings at an average of 52.75 including a highest score of 92*. His form will be crucial to Sri Lanka’s fortunes in this series.
Sachin Tendulkar has been India’s talisman in international cricket for the last 22 years; his impact on the country’s fortunes has been even bigger in ODIs. Whenever he gets India off to a good start with a big score at the top of the order, the opposition is pushed on to the back foot. Having failed in the opening encounter against Australia which India lost by 65 runs, Tendulkar must make this innings count.
