Canberra, Dec 20: Virat Kohli struck a smashing century (132) and R Ashwin took four wickets for 52 runs as CA Chairman’s XI ended Day 2 of the warm-up game against the Indians at 214 for the loss of seven wickets. Earlier, the Indians had been bowled out for 269.

The day resumed with Kohli continuing on his overnight score of 55 and blazing his way past the 100 mark. However, the Indians were not able to build on Kohli’s effort as left-arm orthodox spinner Jon Holland ran through the middle and lower order to end with figures of six for 70. Holland’s victims included Kohli (132), Rohit Sharma (47) and MS Dhoni (3).

The CA Chairman’s XI innings got off to a disastrous start as Abhimanyu Mithun struck in the very first over to get rid of David Warner (2). But opener Ed Cowan’s century, and effective contributions from Usman Khawaja (25) and Tom Cooper (38), saw the hosts post a strong reply at 184 for three in 46.5 overs.

However, R Ashwin, who had accounted for Phil Hughes (20) earlier, then dismissed Cowan (109), Cooper and Alex Doolan (0) in a sensational spell that saw the hosts stumble to 203 for six in 54.1 overs. And with Pragyan Ojha trapping Cameron Boyce (1) lbw in the penultimate over of the day’s play, the match was evenly poised as the hosts trailed the visitors’ first innings score by 55 runs with three wickets in hand.

Wicketkeeper Tim Ludeman was batting on 15 for the hosts when stumps were called.

Brief scores: Indians 1st innings 269 all out in 79.1 overs (Virat Kohli 132, Rohit Sharma 47, Jon Holland 6/70, Peter George 2/62); CA Chairman’s XI 1st innings 7/214 in 59 overs (Ed Cowan 109, Tom Cooper 38, R Ashwin 4/52)
