We put up a good fight: Sammy
Chennai, Dec 12: Managing a sole win in the five-match ODI series against India, the West Indies nonetheless put up a strong fight to chase or defend totals right through; the fifth ODI in Chennai witnessed big-hitter Kieron Pollard register his maiden ODI century in pursuit of a stiff target. Captain Darren Sammy lauded his team for their competitive spirit and thanked them for their continued support in the post-match presentation.
Excerpts:
On the close finish to the match and Kieron Pollard’s (119 off 110) batting display
Yes [and] congratulations to Pollard on his first one-day hundred. It was very good to watch.
On the West Indies getting near the stiff target on a slow and low pitch being an achievement in itself
Yes, we have been playing some good cricket. Unfortunately, guys like myself couldn’t stay with Pollard till the end and bring the game home. We have been fighting throughout the Test and one-day series and like the manager said to me, ‘We are happy with what we have seen on this tour […] The way we fought India [has been commendable]. Everybody expected us to be rolled over and we were not.’
On the highlights and positives from the series
[…] The never say die attitude we had especially in the second ODI […] Guys batting over ten overs, over fifteen overs and putting [up] a good score for us. All in all this series has been good and I would like to congratulate the boys for the effort […] On a personal note, my team out there supported me and I really want to thank them for that.
On playing in India
The crowd has been excellent. It’s nice playing where the home team gets support but most of all they come and enjoy cricket. Throughout the one-day and Test series we have played some good cricket and the crowds have enjoyed it.
On the series
We can only move forward from here. Congrats to [Virender] Sehwag and his team for winning the one-day series. We have had fun and the guys have kept their heads up.
