Chennai, Dec 11: Rohit Sharma, who was named Man-of-the-Series against the West Indies in West Indies earlier this year, once again played a crucial role in India beating the side in the five-match ODI series here.

The Mumbai batsman was deservingly adjudged Man-of-the-Series two match-winning innings in the first two ODIs and a commendable effort in the match at Ahmedabad.

Excerpts from the presentation ceremony:

On being back in the side and amongst the runs after a break due to injury

That was my game plan. Actually I didn’t want to think about [the] past; whatever has happened has happened, you cannot change it now. It’s a new beginning for me. I have concentrated a lot, I have analysed my game and I have rectified my mistakes so hopefully in future they won’t be repeated.

On recuperating from the finger injury he sustained in England

It was a frustrating time. Any injury to your body is frustrating. At that point of time, when I was in good form from the West Indies [tour earlier], I wanted to carry on but unfortunately got injured. Then I was training at NCA [and] doing my rehab and stuff. Hopefully [there’ll be] no more injuries, touchwood, and I will be playing for a long, long time now.

On batting well with the tail

It’s because I have been watching MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh closely, how they finish. How they’ve batted with the tail-enders in the recent past really motivated me. It’s something new that I have learnt and I want to keep going. It’s a huge challenge to bat with the tail-enders; it’s not easy. [I] have to just keep my game plan very simple and not think too much about it. [I tell myself], “Stay calm and you will get there.”

On the performance of the youngsters in the series and on batting with them

They have been brilliant. Virat [Kohli] has been brilliant the last couple of years no. Manoj [Tiwary] – [it’s] good to see him get a hundred there. Even Suresh Raina batted brilliantly in the Indore game. All the youngsters are coming up very [well]. I’m very happy for all of them and hopefully we will continue playing for India for a long time.
