Well played, Sehwag: Sammy
Indore, Dec 8: A brilliant Virender Sehwag took the West Indies attack apart to end his run drought with a double hundred at the Holkar Stadium here. The Indian opener scored 219 runs off 149 deliveries, the highest individual score ever in the 50-over format.
In the post-match presentation, West Indies skipper Darren Sammy congratulated Virender Sehwag while lauding Denesh Ramdin’s effort of 96 runs as his side tried to chase the mammoth target.
Excerpts:
On Virender Sehwag’s stunning innings
Yes, we have had the better of him throughout the Test and one-day series; today he just took advantage [of the conditions]. Brilliant innings, unfortunately we were on the receiving end.
On whether they could have done anything to stop Sehwag, in hindsight
He has destroyed bowlers all over the world. I think we bowled some good balls but he played some tremendous shots. To be fair, he used the wicket quite well. Well played, good innings.
On the pitch
In one-day cricket the crowd loves to see runs and the pitch was a belter, [allowing India to] score 400 [odd] runs […] We ended up getting to 260 [-odd runs]. [Denesh] Ramdin – the way he played, [getting] his highest score and getting to a thousand runs, that was good to see.
On the first ten overs providing WI their best chance of setting the chase on track
Yes, we watched and studied the game where South Africa chased down a 400 [-plus target]. We saw how they went about it. We needed a good start but their bowlers kept taking wickets and once you are chasing a big total and you keep losing wickets, it becomes more difficult to chase it down.
