We created an opportunity: Sammy
Cuttack, Nov 29: West Indies skipper Darren Sammy was happy with the way his team put up a fight despite their narrow loss in the first of the five ODIs against India. In the post-match presentation, Sammy reflected on the team’s performance.
Excerpts:
On not being able to defend 211 after having India struggle at 59 for five
Every time you lose it’s quite disappointing but the coach always tells us to win we’ve got to create that opportunity and we have been creating that. And just as we were looking to find that, the last spark to take us to the finish line, [we could not go all the way].
On whether they felt they had a chance when India were five down despite the small target
Yes, we all knew we didn’t bat as well as we should have but we really fought hard to try to defend the total and the opening bowlers gave us that start. Then [India] had this partnership and then we fought all the way down to the wire but. But in the end the Indians held their nerve and brought the game home.
On whether he could have done anything differently at the death like not giving away singles
Yes, when we look back at the game we will come up with a lot of things we could have done differently. We also bowled 23 extras in that innings, so yes; when you lose a close game like that you tend to come up with all scenarios. But I would just like to commend the boys on the way they fought. That never-say-die attitude this team is starting to show is going to take us a long way.
