Cuttack, Nov 29:  Captain Virender Sehwag was thrilled with the way the lower-order batted to take India to a nail-biting win in the first ODI against West Indies. Sehwag, who is leading the Indian team in the absence of MS Dhoni, also appreciated the efforts of the bowlers and fielders in the post-match presentation.

Excerpts:

On the nerve-wracking finish

I was sitting on one seat and didn’t get up till the match got over. It was good to be on [the] winning side because this is [the] second nail-biting match [in quick succession] – first the third Test match and now this one-dayer. I think people [who] came here expected that the West Indies [would] score 250 or 300 and we would chase [it] easily; but this game was totally different.

On whether he had a chat with the fast bowlers who came in to bat after Rohit Sharma’s dismissal

No, because whatever you say to the No. 10 and 11 batsmen, they will do whatever they want to do and we have seen that. I just said, “Fight it out. Just bat till the last ball and it doesn’t matter what happens.”

On recovering from a score of 59 for five

[Ravindra] Jadeja and Rohit [Sharma] batted really well. They had a very good partnership and after that I must say our lower order’s contribution was fantastic. Especially Vinay [Kumar]; the way he batted with Rohit Sharma, I thought we could win the game easily. Although it did not happen that easily, at the end of the day it’s good to be on the winning side.

On the top-order not clicking

Yes, absolutely, we have to learn from our mistakes here. Our batting didn’t click well but our bowling and fielding was fantastic and hopefully we will continue with that and we can learn from our mistakes in the coming games.
