Ahmedabad, Jan 22:  India Women have won the first Twenty20 match against the West Indies by six wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series being played at the Sardar Patel Stadium, Motera, Ahmedabad.

The Indian team successfully chased down 90 runs with 16 balls to spare with timely and useful contributions from the top and middle order.

Though Poonam Raut was out early, Mithali Raj (27), Harmanpreet Kaur, Priyanka Roy and Rumeli Dhar played well. Despite some good bowling, the West Indies were not able to pick quick wickets which would have put the Indians in a spot.

On the other hand, a watchful batting performance from the Indian batsmen helped them pull through.

Earlier, West Indies captain Merissa Aguilleira won the toss and chose to bat first. But Jhulan Goswami, who has been in good form, put the first dent in the WI plan striking in the very first over to dismiss the dangerous Stafanie Taylor. With Juliana Nero, the other opener, back in the pavilion soon after, the West Indies batsmen had a big task on their hands.

Shanel Daley was the only one to make a mark with 35 runs while Deandra Dottin and Shemaine Capmbelle chipped in with double digit contributions lower down the order.  Shanel Daley was dismissed by Gauhar Sultana who has been bowling well consistently through the tour. The efforts of these three batsmen helped WI put up a fighting total on the board.
