Flanked by the Indian ocean on either side and with the Galle Fort as the backdrop, the Galle International Stadium enjoys one of the most picturesque locations as far as sporting venues go. Formerly known as ‘The Esplanade’, the stadium has witnessed some of the biggest achievements in world cricket. It was at this venue that spin wizard Shane Warne bagged his 500th wicket and Chris Gayle scored a landmark 333 runs in a Test match. Home to the Galle Cricket Club, the pitch here has been a happy hunting ground for spinners; national hero Muttiah Muralitharan has an outstanding record at this venue. After the Tsunami wrecked the stadium completely back in 2004, it was restored in time for the 2008 series against England. Its excellent drainage system allows for games to recommence in about 30 minutes after a rain interruption.
